"Hiya Virgey!" Issac yelled, drawing Virgil out of his thoughts. Virgil shook his head slightly and smiled at his younger brother.
"Hey Issac."
"Virgey? Can Annie come over to play?" Both the nine-year-olds looked at each other.
"Please, please, please, please, please, please." They both pleaded. Virgil sighed.
"What do Annie's parents say?"
"They said it's fine!" Annie said quickly. Virgil shrugged.
"You'll have to ask mum when we get home." He said. Both kids made a sound of disappointment and Annie left.
"Sorry mate but it's short notice." Virgil said as he and Issac walked down the street.
"But it's not fair!" Issac protested.
"I know it's not fair. But you'll get to see her tomorrow, right?"
"Yeah, I guess." Issac mumbled. "But she's my best friend."
Virgil laughed slightly and soon Issac started talking about his day, letting Virgil slowly slip into day-dream mode.
There was something odd about being at least mutual friends with Roman. They would talk sometimes, yes, but Virgil seemed to be more on the outskirts than ever. It was odd and worse than before. Before, Virgil hadn't minded. You know, if you aren't in a group, you aren't bothered. But now, Virgil minded slightly because he knew that someone had actually noted his existence. And that was an... odd thought.
"Hey Virgil." Roman said, making Virgil jump. He didn't look up from his notes.
"Hi Princey." He muttered. "How's school going?"
"Eh." Roman said, sitting on the wall next to Virgil.
"Eh?" Virgil repeated. "Care to elaborate?"
"Sure. It's difficult. How's skipping going?"
Virgil sighed, leaning his head back to look at the cloudy sky. "It's kinda boring. You always have to hide from teachers and I'm no gymnast so getting over the fences is not an option."
Roman made a 'hm' noise and looked at Virgil's notes. Out of habit, Virgil pulled his notebook closer to his chest, shielding his writing.
"Ah, sorry. Forgot you didn't like people looking at your works-in-progress." Now it was Virgil's turn to make a 'hm' noise. "But anything interesting you've seen today?"
"Um..." Virgil looked around the playground before pointing to a Gossiper and a Bookworm. "See them?" He asked and Roman nodded. "Best friends, I bet. Look at their body language. Even though they're in their different groups, they're unconsciously angled towards each other."
"So why haven't you classed them as part of the 'best friend' group?" Roman asked. He had long since memorized the seven names for the different groups.
"Because they're in their separate groups for who-knows-why. My bet is that they're embarrassed that they're such good friends."
"That's a weird thing to be embarrassed about." Roman mused. Virgil nodded, returning to his writing.
"It's kinda how I think you'd feel about being friends with me." Virgil muttered under his breath, hoping Roman hadn't caught what he was saying. Roman hadn't.
"Well, well, well. Hello love-birds." A voice from behind them made them both jump.
"Remus." Roman hissed as his brother laughed. Virgil raised an eyebrow, looking from twin to twin.
"Love-birds?" He repeated, a disbelieving tone in his voice.
"Yup." Remus said, nodding his head. Roman clapped a hand over his brother's mouth and immediately regretted it.
"Did you just lick me?" He asked, taking his hand away from Remus' mouth as if something had burnt him. Virgil let out a sharp laugh. "What're you laughing at, Hot Topic?" Roman asked absently, wiping his hand along the wall.
"Aw, you think I'm hot." Virgil said, a smirk playing across his face. Roman's eyes widened as Remus laughed.
"Oh shut up, Remus." Roman said harshly, looking at his hand. "I can't believe you'd sink to such a little-kid way of getting me annoyed and disgusted."
"Believe it, brother, because you're stuck with it." Remus said, grinning manically before running off. Virgil pointed his pen at him.
"So does he just... usually do that?"
Roman nodded. "Unfortunately."
Virgil snickered again before writing something in his notes, his tongue poking out slightly as he concentrated. Roman thought he looked incredibly cute then mentally shook himself.
"Get it together, Roman." He thought firmly. "You not falling in love with Virgil."
