Roman's eyes flicked towards the staircase and back to his twin.

"Look, can we talk about this another time? I've only just won," he couldn't keep the triumph out of his voice when he said this, "and Virgil's still here."

"No, no, no." Remus said, spreading his arms wide so that he blocked Roman's exit. "We're talking about this now."

Roman sighed and leaned against the island in the middle of the kitchen. "Fine. What do we need to talk about? The rules are pretty clear, I think."

Remus crossed his arms in front of himself. "Virgil's told you he loves you?" He asked. Roman nodded. Remus sighed, a spark of something Roman couldn't place in his eyes, and forked a stub of a pencil and a tiny notepad out of his jean pocket.

"What're you doing?"

"Writing an IOU for 20 pounds." Remus muttered, scribbling something on a post-it and handing it to Roman. "So when are you going to tell him?"

"Tell who what?" Roman asked distractedly, shoving the note into his pocket.

"Tell Virgil about the whole bet."

"Do I have to?" Roman asked. "I was kinda enjoying being in a relationship. And wasn't that the whole point of this? To find someone for me?"

Remus groaned. "Ro, if I had wanted to get you a boyfriend, I would've downloaded you a dating app. Not set this whole thing up." His eyes locked with Roman's. "You're going to have to tell Virgil."

"No need to." Another voice said from the stairs, making the twins jump. It was Virgil, his grey eyes pained and hard. His face was set and Roman couldn't tear his eyes away. He was dimly aware that Remus had disappeared.

"How much did you hear?" He asked, already feeling guilt welling up inside him. Virgil shrugged.

"Most of it." There was a slight tremble to his voice. "So all of this was for money? All of it?"

Roman opened his mouth but found nothing to say. Instead, he nodded slightly. Virgil laughed humourlessly, the sound breathless and cold, and looked away. When he looked back at Roman, tears were leaking out of the corners of his eyes.

"So you felt nothing. Absolutely nothing?" He asked. He marched towards Roman and grabbed his hand, lacing their fingers together. He held their locked hands up in front of Roman. "You are telling that you feel nothing, nothing, from me doing this?"

Roman swallowed, not able to look away from Virgil's steely eyes, and shook his head. Virgil let out another humourless, breathless laugh and dropped his hand. "I should've known." He muttered. "God, why did I open up to another one of you?" He laughed again, tear tracks slowly appearing in his make-up. "You felt nothing, huh?" Roman shook his head again, his throat so clogged with emotion he didn't think he would be able to talk if he tried. "I guess it makes sense. I felt enough for two people. Dear God, I loved you. I still do." The words seemed to be pouring out of him now. "And that's what makes this so much worse. I thought I was healed from last time. Well, I'm not. Same old break, new breaker."

Roman wetted his lips and tried to speak. "Virgil-"

"Don't talk to me. Don't spout out any more lies. I am done with you, Roman Winston." Roman flinched slightly as if Virgil had hit him. Virgil turned around and grabbed his shoes. Shoving his feet into his purple trainers, he looked up at Roman. This time, there were no walls behind his eyes. They had crumbled, showing Roman just how much pain Virgil was feeling. "I love you, Roman, but I should never have trusted you."

Virgil closed the door behind him, leaving a stunned, silent Roman behind him. Roman's mind spiralled back through every single moment he'd spent with Virgil. Every time Virgil had laughed, every time he and Virgil had talked about musicals, every single time he'd just watched Virgil write his notes. Then his mind focused on one specific moment. The first time he and Virgil had kissed. It had felt like a fire spreading through his whole body from where he and Virgil were connected.

Roman realised something. Something he'd kind of always known.

Roman knocked on his bedroom door, drawing in a shaky breath. Hearing no reply, he opened the door anyway. Remus was on his computer, laughing quietly as he shot an opponent on his game.

"Hey Re?"

Remus looked around at his brother. "One sec, guys, gals and non-binary pals." He muttered into his headset before hanging it around his neck. "What's u- Roman, are you crying?"

Roman put £20 pounds on the desk next to Remus. Remus looked from the money to Roman.

"But you won?"

Roman shook his head. "I didn't. I broke a rule."

"What?"

"I fell in love."
