Virgil ran. He wanted to get as far away from that house as he possibly could. He ran down the pavement, praying that he wouldn't cry out in public. At one point, he tripped over a loose shoe-lace and went crashing to the ground. As he got up, he could feel blood running down his leg through his jeans.
He ran into his house, closing the door blindly behind him, and sprinted up the stairs to his bedroom. He curled up in a ball on his bed and pulled his phone out of his pocket. There was nothing. No messages, no missed calls. Nothing. Roman hadn't even tried to contact him to tell him he was sorry and all that bullshit. That made Virgil feel even worse.
He drew up Roman's contact and went to press block. But his hand stopped just before it reached the block button. Virgil closed his phone and threw it down at the end of his bed, bringing his knees up to his chest, not caring about or noticing the pain from his graze. He turned his head towards his pillow and just cried.
"Knock knock?"
Virgil looked up. His dad was leaning against the doorframe. "Can I come in?" He asked, noting Virgil's red eyes, smeared makeup and just general heart-broken air. Virgil shrugged and sat up.
Jason sat down opposite his son. "What's happened?"
Virgil looked down. "You wouldn't get it." He muttered.
"No, I think I would."
Virgil shook his head, still looking down. "You really wouldn't." He sighed. "Your hearts never been something that's bet on."
Jason sighed and leaned back in his chair. "Roman." He said, cracking his knuckles. It wasn't a question. Virgil nodded and Jason could see that more tears had sprung to his eyes. "Hey." he said, a lot softer. "It's going to be okay. I went through something like this when I was your age."
Virgil looked his dad in the eye, grey on grey. "But how? You were with mum since you moved here." He said dead-pan.
Jason nodded his head to the side. "True. But it wasn't always easily. Your mother and I never had a... stable relationship in high school. I used to think that love was God and she just needed someone she could rely on, for the time being." Jason was looking at the floor now. "You feel things a lot more when you're a teenager."
Virgil looked down too. "Anything that makes you want to rip your heart out?" He asked, pulling on the strings on his hoodie.
Jason nodded his head to the side again. "Sometimes." He looked at his son and sighed, the sound more worried than exasperated. "Look, I can see that you still care about this boy so I'm not going to hurt him. And all of what your feel isn't going to go away anytime soon. But... it'll get better and you'll get used to it." He stood up. "Now, I'm going to go get you a plaster. You're bleeding through your jeans."
Virgil looked down at his knee. There was a dark splotch on the blue denim. He looked at his dad who was standing in the doorway again.
"I can't do it." He told him. "I can't block Roman. I still love him, dad."
Jason nodded and there was some unreadable pain in his eyes. "I know."
Who thought that they would ever see JD comforting someone in a non-creepy way?! No one? Okay. Once again, please don't kill me.
Bye,
Queenie
