It had started to rain. Just a little mist at first but now the rain was coming down in huge droplets, hitting the ground and bouncing back up. It was the kind of rain that ruined your socks and shoes and that somehow found its way down your neck, even if you had a hood or an umbrella. And Virgil was out in the thick of it.
"Issac! It's time to go in now!" He yelled, panic spiking in his chest as he momentarily lost sight of his younger brother. But Issac came running back at the sound of his name, drenched to the skin, his black fringe plastered to his forehead but grinning like anything.
"But Virgy." He whined, having to yell against the pounding rain. "I just found this really good puddle to jump in and-"
"I don't care if you found the Loch Ness monster, we are going home. We'll both catch our deaths out here." He muttered quietly, grabbing his little brothers hand and pulling him away from the trees. He ignored Issac's persistent protests, trying not to get lost in the oncoming downpour.
"Issac be quiet." He snapped suddenly. "Now, we are going to go home before we drown out here and- where are you looking?" Issac pointed behind Virgil excitedly.
"It's your boyfriend!" He said, smiling. Virgil sighed.
"How does he show up everywhere?" He thought, already dragging Issac away again. Hearing another pair of footsteps, he started to try run, his feet sliding out from under him on the wet pavement. He landed with a thump, drenching the seat of his jeans. Amid Issac's giggles, he struggled to his feet.
"Are you okay?" Great. Roman had caught up with them. Virgil grabbed Issac's hand and slapped his free hand over his mouth.
"Perfectly fine until you showed up." He hissed bitterly. Roman opened his mouth to say something but Virgil cut him off. "Shut it. I don't want to have this conversation now, in front of my brother."
"What's wrong, Virgy?" Somehow, Issac had gotten his mouth free of Virgil's hand. Virgil looked down at his brother hesitantly.
"It's nothing." Virgil looked around and spied his house just at the edge of the road. "Issac, why don't you run along home? You're soaked."
"Okay." Issac said, letting go of his older brother's hand and running off.
"So are we having this conversation now?" Roman asked, a little confused. Virgil sighed and brushed his wet fringe out of his eyes.
"I guess we are. But do both of us a favour and stop lying, would you?"
Roman growled, finally at the end of his tether. "Virgil, I've not been lying about any of this!" He yelled. "I can't go on for much longer with you looking like that every time I see you!"
"Like what?" Virgil raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms. Roman sighed, trying to find the words.
"Like... I don't know. Like, perfect, I guess."
Virgil laughed. "Dear God, Roman. You really are bad at lying. I don't look perfect and even if I did, you wouldn't be able to notice it since you can't see past the end of your nose. Why not come and try and talk to me when you've got some good lies lined up, okay?"
"Virgil Summers, you are not going to walk away from me again!" Roman yelled as Virgil turned his back. "I have tried talking to you about this like a civilised human being but I can't do that when you won't even let me get a word in. Yes, I know what I did was wrong. I know that. But that doesn't stop me from being glad that I agreed to that bet. I'm glad because I met you. Hell, I even got to be in a relationship with you for a month or something. So don't turn your back on me again when all I can feel is my heart breaking every time I see you."
Virgil glared at Roman, sizing him up, and Roman got the strange feeling that Virgil could see into his soul again. Saying nothing, Virgil turned around and walked away.
Roman's shoulders slumped as he titled his head up to the sky, sighing in defeat. "Remus was right." He thought, the odd thought quirking the side of his mouth into a humourless smile. "This is just like a film."
