Virgil hissed slightly as he felt someone tap his shoulder.
"Oh, so you're a cat now?" Someone asked, a laughing tone to their voice. Virgil swallowed slightly. God, did he have to be so nervous now? Why right this moment, out of all the moments in the day?
"I'm a cat-like person." He said after what felt like days. "If I was a cat, I'd be hissing at you a lot more Princey."
Roman laughed, sitting down next to Virgil and trying to look at his notebook. Virgil closed it and put it in his bag.
"Why do you carry that notebook around everywhere with you?" Roman asked. Virgil thought. He'd never really thought about why before. His notebook was like his safety blanket, full of his familiar spidery black scrawl. It was something familiar and comforting for when things felt alienating and overwhelming. Virgil shrugged.
"It's just a habit." He said, his voice slightly strained from the weight of the lie he was telling. It wasn't a big lie, just a heavy one for him to tell. Why though? He knew he liked Roman - Hell, he even loved him - but that didn't give him a reason to trust Roman. Virgil still didn't know why Roman had started talking to him in the first place.
Roman laughed in a way that showed he wasn't convinced. "Sorry about my brother." He said suddenly. "He gets these things into his head and whatever he thinks comes straight out of his mouth. It's like this.... disease? I don't know."
Virgil laughed in his throat slightly. "Must run in the family." He said, laughing out-right when Roman gasped dramatically and put a hand over his heart.
"How dare you, my good sir! I am mortally wounded by your comment and fear I shall never survive!"
Virgil started laughing again. "Yeah, well that's the point of a mortal wound. It kills you." Virgil was too busy laughing to notice that Roman was staring at him. Roman himself didn't realise he was staring at Virgil, he just couldn't really help it. Virgil's face had completely lit up with a smile and Roman thought that he looked beautiful. It was such a subconscious thought that he didn't even bother to check himself for thinking it.
"Uh, Princey? You okay?" Virgil asked, waving his hand in front of Roman's face, snapping Roman out of his semi-trance.
"Oh, yeah, fine. Sorry."
"Okay." Virgil said slowly. Roman noticed that his cheeks were growing hot and cleared his throat awkwardly, looking away from the suspicious emo.
"Why are we friends?" Virgil asked suddenly. "Why did you decide to start talking to me?"
"The bet." Roman thought immediately but he knew he would have to fabricate some lie or bend the truth slightly. "My brother dared me to befriend the loner of the school." He said, praying that his acting skills were as good as everyone said they were. Virgil laughed slightly.
"So why not just stop talking to me? You've won the dare."
Roman shrugged. "Maybe I don't want to stop talking to you." He said, not really thinking. Virgil looked away, cursing himself for blushing.
"Oh." He smiled slightly. "Thanks."
Roman nodded, returning Virgil's sheepish smile. "Come on, Roman." He thought urgently. "Just ask him. You're nearly half-way through your time-limit and you've not even asked him yet."
"Virgil?" He asked tentatively. "Would you maybe consider going to the park with me tonight?"
"What, like on a date?" Virgil asked half-jokingly, trying to hide how his heart was desperately trying to escape. Roman nodded, already bracing himself for rejection and losing the bet.
"You want to go on a date with me?" Virgil clarified. Roman nodded again. "I'd love to." Virgil said, his face surprisingly open. Roman realised he had finally gotten through Virgil's mask. He smiled, half with relief and half with the triumph of being able to rub it in Remus' face.
"That's... great. Really, really awesome." Roman said, not bothering to stop the amount of happiness and triumph coming through his voice. "Um, pick you up at seven?"
Virgil nodded, smiling and swinging his legs as Roman walked away, a skip in his step that hadn't been there before.
"So? What's the verdict?" Janus asked, only half interested. Remus shushed him, making Janus roll his eyes. "Has Virgil agreed or not? I want my ex-friends to experience a bit of happiness before you and your brother rip his heart out."
"Roman's coming over now, shut it." Remus said, shushing his boyfriend again before sitting down next to him. "So?" He asked, jumping up and dragging Janus up with him as Roman approached them.
"Suck it, Remus, he said yes." Roman said, his face alight with triumph and his eyes dancing with a light Janus had only ever seen Remus radiate before. Maybe these brothers were more alike than Janus had given them credit for being.
Remus let out a noise that was somehow disappointed but excited at the same time. "When're you picking him up."
"Seven pm."
