Roman felt his heart sink as Virgil's eyes lit up slightly in the dying light. Virgil was... in love with Roman. Why did that make him feel so down? He should be happy, he's going to win the bet.
"Princey?" Virgil asked, letting go of Roman's hand to zip up his jacket. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, why?"
"You seem sad." Virgil said, his eyes searching Roman's. Roman once again thought he was looking into his soul. Roman didn't say anything and didn't look away. They seemed locked together in time, standing on the outskirts of the park, staring at each other. Then, Virgil blinked and looked away. The spell, whatever it had been, was broken and time resumed.
"Hey Virge?" Roman asked, suddenly getting an idea.
"Yeah?"
"Close your eyes."
"Why?"
"Just," Roman took Virgil's hand and smiled at him, "trust me on this one."
Virgil's eyes locked with Roman's for a second before he looked away and closed his eyes. Carefully, Roman put his other hand on Virgil's shoulder and led him towards the centre of the park.
"Are we nearly there, Princey? I keep tripping over things." Virgil said and, as if to prove his point, stumbled over a tree root.
"Nearly there, don't worry." Roman reassured, grinning as he led Virgil down a secluded path. He stopped. "Okay. We're here. You can open your eyes."
He let go of Virgil's hand and stood back. Virgil opened his eyes cautiously, as if afraid that something might jump at him.
"Wow." He breathed.
They were standing near a marble fountain, quietly playing as the dying light from the sun bounced off the marble and the water, turning the stone a pale orange and fracturing the water with spots of colour. At the bottom of the fountain were hundreds, maybe thousands, of pennies, all glimmering and shining in the light.
"This place is beautiful." Virgil said, turning back to Roman.
"I used to come here all the time as a kid." Roman said, standing beside Virgil and looked into the fountain, his eyes hopping from penny to penny. "I always used to bring money to make a wish. And now," he dug around in his pocket and brought out a 5p coin and a 10p coin. He gave one to Virgil, "we get to make a wish."
Virgil laughed slightly, the sound bouncing off the trees around them. "Okay." He thought for a few minutes then closed his eyes, his mouth moving silently as he made a wish. Then, he kissed the coin and threw it into the fountain.
"Why kiss it?"
"For good luck. My dad always said that kissing the coin increases the wish. What about you? Aren't you going to wish for something?"
"I've already got everything I've ever wished for." Roman said, smiling. Virgil looked up at the sky, his face blushing slightly.
"That was a cheesy line." He muttered and Roman laughed.
"Well it worked." Roman retorted playfully, pointing at Virgil's pink cheeks. Virgil glared at Roman but there was no malice in that stare and that made Roman feel even worse. He'd gotten through Virgil's walls and he was going to leave him scarred and broken. Roman pushed that thought away.
"Focus on now." He thought.
Virgil sat down on a bench near the fountain. "Why did I let Remy dress me in platform boots?" He asked the sky. Roman laughed slightly, sitting down next to him.
"Your brothers doing again?"
"Oh, you have no idea." Virgil said, looking at Roman. "All of this? Remy. 100% Remy." He laughed slightly.
"Well, you pull it off wonderfully and you look beautiful."
Virgil laughed. "I know. You've mentioned. Several times."
"And I'll keep mentioning it because it's true." Roman said, laughing.
Something happened in that moment. The same thing that had happened in Roman's room. Something seemed to flicker between the two boys, making the air around them grow heavier. But, this time, Roman did what neither of them had been brave enough to do back in his room. He went with his instincts and leaned in.
His lips met Virgil's and it felt like fireworks running through Virgil's veins. His eyes slipped closed as he kissed Roman back, his hands finding their way into Roman's hair.
Roman was the first to pull back, breaking the kiss. Virgil opened his eyes and looked at Roman, the grey light coming from his eyes looking like starlight. His face was pink and he buried it in Roman's shoulder. Roman smiled slightly.
"Virgil?" He asked.
"Mhm?" Virgil mumbled, his face still buried in Roman's shoulder. The words died in Roman's throat.
"Nevermind."
Virgil let go of Roman and stood up, checking his phone for the time.
"I think I need to get home." He said. Roman bounced up, nearly throwing the bench back with the force of his bounce.
"I'll walk you." He said. Virgil laughed at his eagerness.
"Sure."
