"Hey."
Virgil jumped and looked over to who was speaking. It was a boy from his school. He had his blazer tied around his waist and was grinning sheepishly.
"Sorry if I made you jump." He clicked his fingers, trying to remember something. "You're, uh, Issac's older brother, aren't you? 'Virgy'."
Virgil nodded. "I'm Virgil. I assume if you know Issac so well, you're Annie's older brother."
The boy nodded. "Eric."
"Nice to meet you." Virgil said politely as the school bell rang and about 200 kids ran out of the building. Issac and his friend both ran up to the two boys, both clutching paper pumpkins and grinning.
"Virgy! Look and what me and Annie made!" Issac said excitedly, thrusting the paper pumpkin in Virgil's face.
"I can see quite well, Issac. I don't need it blinding me." Virgil said, moving Issac's hand away from his face. "Do anything fun as well as make pumpkins?"
"Uh-huh! We watched a movie!" Issac said excitedly. It was the last day of the half-term and Issac's primary school always made a big deal out of it.
"Oh, what did you watch?" Virgil asked. Annie butted into the conversation, addressing both Eric and Virgil at the same time.
"We watched Coraline. I got kinda scared." She admitted bashfully before grabbing Issac's hand and holding it up in the air. "But Issac helped me! He let me squeeze his arm every time I got scared and then he'd give me a hug!"
Issac smiled slightly. "It's what anyone should do." He muttered but Virgil didn't fail to notice the pleased look in his eyes. Virgil laughed slightly, so quietly that he was the only one who could hear.
"We'd better get going, Issac." Both nine-year-olds made a noise of disappointment. "Come on."
Issac sighed and turned to Annie. "Are you alright now, Annie?" He asked, worried. Annie nodded and grinned.
"Yep. Thank you for helping me through the scary parts of the film." She said, hugging Issac tightly. Issac jumped slightly, surprised, before carefully hugging Annie back.
"No problem." He said as Annie let go.
"Bye." She said suddenly, grabbing Eric's hand and trying to pull him away. "Thank you again!"
Eric and Virgil locked eyes and knew what they had both just seen hadn't been their imagination. Both their younger siblings had a very bad case of 'First Crush'.
"So... you helped Annie through the scary parts of Coraline. Isn't that most of the film?" He asked teasingly, receiving a shove from his younger brother who was scowling but blushing lightly.
"Shut up." Issac pouted, making Virgil laugh. "Stop laughing!" This made Virgil laugh even more.
"Alright, alright." He said after getting another shove from the nine-year-old. There was a spell of silence. "She likes you back, you know."
"Shut up!" Issac yelled, pouting and blushing even more. "I don't like her! Girls are yucky." He said, less conviction in the last sentence.
"Yet your best friend is a girl." Virgil said, trying not to laugh again. "Something doesn't add up."
"Okay, some girls aren't yucky." Issac said begrudgingly. "But liking girls like that is yucky."
"And you, my friend, have got a case of the yuckies." Virgil said, not being able to contain a laugh as Issac shoved him again.
"I don't!" Issac insisted, his pink face betraying him. "I like Annie as a friend! A friend!"
Virgil laughed again, quieter this time. "That's called denial, Issac." He muttered.
"Shut up!"
Was this a filler chapter? Yes.
Do I care? No.
Was it cute? For me to write, yes.
Bye,
Queenie
