The morning came softly, gently, the comforter a summer's breeze around Eddy's back, his belly warmly pressed to Brett's side as his head lay on his chest, just like his dream from the night before.
He kept his eyes firmly closed, even though he'd been awake for a while by now, even though he had no idea what time it was, but he realised full well that the morning must have been running out quickly. And even though he knew that Brett was also awake under him, because his breath had stopped being slow and deep.
Oh, this moment, to keep this moment for ever, to not have to deal ever again with a reality where he'd be going home in just a couple of hours; home, where his empty room would be waiting for him, his bed cold and lonely once more.
It was Brett who made the sound eventually. One of his low hums escaped his throat, making his chest vibrate softly under Eddy's cheek.
Soon, too soon... but he had no choice now, so he opened his eyes, blinking straight away against the sun, up high already, doing its best to shine through the window drapes.
"Good morning." he smiled, turning slightly so he could see Brett's sweet face, his cheeks still slightly pink with sleep, his face so different without the glasses.
"Hi. Sorry to wake you up."
Eddy shook his head. "Nah, I was awake, really. Just didn't want to disturb... anything."
There was something rueful in Brett's soft smile.
"Uhuh. I'm guessing they'll expect us downstairs at some point, though."
"Yeah. Not quite yet, though."
He lay his head back down on Brett's chest, his arm draped over his torso with his hand snaking under Brett's shoulder blade on the other side.
"This is heaven." he whispered.
Brett nodded, his chin moving against Eddy's hair.
"Yeah."

There was a soft knock at the door and Lily's voice drifted through the wood.
"Guys, you awake? I've made scrambled eggs."
Eddy turned his head towards the sound. "Yeah, we're awake, come on in."
She opened the door and stepped onto the soft carpet on her bare feet. She was dressed in yoga pants and a shirt, her hair still unkempt. The second she saw them she smiled.
"You guys are adorable."
Eddy grinned. "Thanks, I guess? Eggs sounds great, you're really spoiling us, Lily."
She shrugged. "I like cooking. So, see you downstairs?"
"Yep." he said, sitting up now. "Five minutes."

The way Eddy saw it; five minutes would give them two minutes to get dressed, and three minutes to have one last real, no-one-is going-to-catch-us hug.

Time wasn't his friend, on these days, because before he knew the front door had opened to let Lily's parents in and he was running up the stairs to grab his bag and his violin. He'd make Mrs. Huang a promise, after all.
"Bach double?" Brett asked him as he slung his own violin case on his back.
"Yeah, sure."
It was their best earner, on the streets of Brisbane, so Mrs. Huang was sure to like it. And look. It was Bach. Even after playing it a million times he couldn't deny the brilliance of the music. Not like Canon in D, which he was thorougly sick of by this point, really.
They walked downstairs slightly more cautiously and followed Mrs. Huang into the living room.
They didn't need sheet music, of course. He could probably play this backwards. He smiled once at Mr. and Mrs. Huang, who had sat down on the couch he had occupied with Brett just last night, and were looking at them expectantly, while Lily and Matt were on the other couch. Then he looked at Brett, who always played first in this piece, to check if he was ready to go. Brett smiled briefly in acknowledgement, so Eddy breathed in, raised his bow and started on the familiar little D minor opening scale.
