CALM es el cuarto álbum de estudio de 5 Seconds of Summer y la continuación de Youngblood de junio de 2018. El título del álbum es un acrónimo de los nombres de los miembros: Calum, Ashton, Luke, Michael. Sobre el nombre del álbum, Luke Hemmings dijo en una entrevista:
“También es un guiño a nuestros fans que nos acuñaron ese nombre en nuestros primeros días. Han estado usando ese acrónimo durante mucho tiempo. Simplemente resume que somos un poco mayores y un poco más sabios.”
El 23 de mayo de 2019, se lanzó Easier como el sencillo principal del proyecto junto con un video musical adjunto. El segundo sencillo, Teeth, fue lanzado el 21 de agosto de 2019. La pista de apertura del álbum, Red Desert, se presentó en el evento G'Day USA en enero de 2020 para los incendios forestales australianos. El título del álbum, la portada y la fecha de lanzamiento se confirmaron a través de la cuenta oficial de Instagram de la banda el 5 de febrero de 2020, junto con el single No Shame y su imponente video lírico. En diciembre de 2019, la banda anunció la gira No Shame por el Reino Unido y Europa, que promocionará el álbum. Sus fechas para Norte América se anunciaron en enero de 2020. Wildflower fue lanzado como sencillo promocional el 25 de marzo, sólo dos días antes del lanzamiento del álbum. Sin embargo, se filtró poco antes de su lanzamiento oficial junto con Thin White Lies y la versión en estudio de Red Desert. El álbum fue un éxito comercial y recibió críticas positivas de los críticos que elogiaron el crecimiento lírico y la madurez de la banda. Debido a un error de envío, Billboard lanzó aproximadamente 10,000 copias del álbum a principios de los Estados Unidos, lo que provocó que el álbum llegara a las listas una semana antes de lo debido. CALM is 5 Seconds of Summer's fourth studio album and the follow-up to June 2018's Youngblood. The album title is an acronym of the member's first names: Calum, Ashton, Luke, Michael. About the album name, Luke Hemmings said in an interview:
It's also a nod to our fans that coined us that name in our early days. They've been using that acronym for a long time. It kind of just sums up [that] we're a little bit older and a little bit wiser.
On May 23, 2019, “Easier” was released as the lead single from the project along with an accompanying music video. The second single, “Teeth” was released on August 21, 2019. The album's opening track, “Red Desert” was previewed at the G'Day USA event in January 2020 for the Australian bushfires. The album's title, artwork, and release date were confirmed via the band's official Instagram account on February 5, 2020, along with “No Shame” and its commandingly lyric video. In December 2019, the band announced the No Shame UK and European tour, which will promote the album. Its North American dates were announced in January 2020. “Wildflower” was released as a promotional single on March 25, just two days ahead of the album's release. However, it leaked shortly before its official release along with “Thin White Lies” and the studio version of “Red Desert.” The album was a commercial success and received positive reviews from critics who praised the band's lyrical growth and maturity. Due to a shipping error, approximately 10,000 copies of the album were released by Billboard early in the US, subsequently causing the album to chart a week before it was due. With CALM earning the band their fourth consecutive number one in their home country, 5 Seconds of Summer became the second Australian band in history to have their first four full-length studio albums debut at number one on the ARIA albums chart.
