Olivia's pov.
As soon as we were ready, Old Lani started shoving all of us into her van, squealing like a preschooler about how much fun we were going to have. Completely confused, we all got into our seats anyway. Moments later, she started the engine and we were on the road.
We played a few games along the way and stopped whenever we saw a petrol station—either to pee, grab snacks, or fill up the tank.
Halfway through the trip, most of us had fallen asleep except for me, Old Lani, and Owen. We just sat there quietly, listening to whatever soft song the radio decided to bless us with. Feeling tired, I let my eyes close and drifted off.
"WAKE UP ASSHATS!!! YOU'VE ARRIVED AT YOUR DESTINATION!!! IF YOU DON'T WAKE UP RIGHT NOW, I SWEAR I'M DRIVING THIS CAR OFF A CLIFF WITH YOU IN IT! WAKE UP, BIATCHES!!!"
That's what I woke up to.
I opened my eyes to find Old Lani standing there with a megaphone. Where she got it from? No idea. It's Old Lani. She gets whatever she wants—even if it means ending someone's life.
Everyone groaned awake, including Owen and Ocean. Old Lani was smirking proudly as we all climbed out of the van. I glanced around. Of course she brought us to this farmhouse—she always chose this place. But honestly? I loved the countryside. It was so calm.
I waved at Bill, a man in his late sixties and Old Lani's best friend. He owned this place, and I loved him for giving us a home away from home. That's when Duster, his collie, came running toward us. Smartest dog I've ever met.
He ran up to Owen—who was carrying Ocean—and then up to me, carrying River. Both kids were still asleep. Duster stared up at them with those longing puppy eyes.
"Not now, Dusty," I chuckled as Owen and I carried the kids to their room. Duster followed us eagerly and then sat beside the bed, watching them sleep like the loyal guardian he was. I still don't know how he formed such a strong bond with them—the last time he saw them, they were one-year-olds. But honestly? It was adorable.
Once the kids were settled, Owen and I headed back to the living room where everyone had gathered.
"Hey, Bill," I said, giving him a hug.
"Supppp, kid. How are you?" he asked with a grin.
"Fine, as always," I replied.
Owen stepped in for a hug too, and soon enough we were all sitting together in the living room, laughing and joking around.
It felt so good to be here.
Like all the worries I carried just... stayed behind.
And honestly, that was the best part.
