Olivia's pov
Freya and I were sitting in her truck as she drove us to the market to deliver the fruits and vegetables Bill had grown. The radio played an old country song, and we sat in a comfortable silence.
When we reached the market, we handed everything over to the workers and headed back.
Once again, we sat quietly until Freya suddenly took a turn away from the direction of the house. I looked at her and smirked. I knew exactly what we were about to do.
Freya pulled up in front of the diner. The special thing about this place is that it always plays 90s music. You'll see cowboys, cowgirls, travelers, and merchants. At night, the diner becomes something magical. Once a year, on a Friday, they host a retro-style party. People from all over the world who hear about it come to enjoy the night. The best part is, you don't have to worry about anything.
"Heyyyy, Olivia is back!" Jane cheered as soon as she saw us walk in.
Jane is around sixty years old and owns the place with her husband, Sam. They're an adorable couple. I met them during my first visit here. Jane has a tongue sharper than a blade, and Sam has more patience and peace than a white pigeon or a white flag could ever offer. I know, weird comparison—but deal with it.
"Hi Jane. How are you? Where's Sam?" I asked as I hugged her. She squeezed me tight and gave two hearty slaps on my back. I think I just dislocated my entire spine.
"I'm fine, kid. Sam's somewhere outside doing God knows what," she said, then smiled at Freya. "Freya, how are you? How's the new member?"
Wait—new member?
I glanced at Freya's stomach. She caught on quickly and clarified.
"She's talking about Millie. Aya's calf," she said.
I nodded just as Jane brought over our order.
"Well, Olivia, you came at the right time. Tomorrow is the Friday Night party. You know the rules. Retro style only, and no money—everything's free," she said.
I mentally did a happy dance. They choose the day through a lucky draw, and apparently, I'm lucky this time.
I couldn't wait to tell Old Lani. She loves this party. But who knows what the night will bring, especially since Old Lani and Jane can't stand each other. The last time they were in the same room, they ended up covered in mud with torn clothes. They're both wild.
When I got home, I told everyone about the party over lunch. They were all excited—except for Old Lani. She crossed her arms and scowled.
"So she's going to be there, right?" she asked, clearly annoyed.
"Yes, she is. And Old Lani, I expect you to be on your best behavior. Please, no fighting," I said, giving her a pleading look.
"And don't drink more than two shots. You can't handle it. I don't want to carry you home again," Bill added.
Old Lani ignored both of us and turned to Ocean and River.
"Both of you. I'm your favorite, right?" she asked.
The kids nodded eagerly.
"Yes, Old Lani. We will stay loyal to you until the end," Ocean said, and River agreed.
"Good. You know my number, right? If you have any problems, don't forget to call me."
I smiled at how adorable they were. Ocean and River have the best family. It comforts me to know they'll be in safe hands if I can't be with them anymore.
