XXIX: The one

Taking a bag with enough quantity of flowers, she finally made it to the house knocking at the door, received by Mikasa who was less shy than before, even offered her a faint smile which resembled Levi's one.

"My girl!" Carla left the dishes she was washing to came and hugged her tightly giving her kisses in both cheeks. She smiled to her and retuned the embrace. "I'm glad you finally made it home."

"I'm glad to see you, thanks for receiving me even if I didn't announce it."

Both women finished prepared the dinner while the kids were looking through a book. When the dinner was ready, Hazel approached them to look the book with them. "What is this book about?"

The three were sitting in the couch of the living room waiting for Dr. Jaeger to came home.

"A friend of ours lend it to us. You see this, it's call ocean, a big body of water which go till the end of the horizon." Eren was excited showing several drawings over the book. "It's a forbidden book, please don't tell my parents."

"Okay, it will be our secret." Hazel looked deeply to the drawing of the beautiful landscape. "Is this real?"

"I hope so. When I get into the Scouts Legion, I want to explore outside the walls until get to the ocean."

Eren closed the book quickly when the door opened showing his dad, hidden it below the pillow. Everyone welcomed him and took dinner together chatting about Hazel's promotion.

"I'm very proud, you deserve it." Carla stood up from the table taking the dishes and leaving them in the sink.

"The other day, I heard about a soldier who's the strongest of all and killed an abnormal by himself. I want to be like him one day and kill all the titans." Eren's eyes were wide open, shinning whenever he talked about the survey corps. His mom gave him a faint tap in his head to shut him up. Everyone knew Carla was against his wish of becoming a soldier. With a pout he stop talking.

"I couldn't be there to see it, but everyone said it was incredible. Indeed he's strong and very skillful. His name is Levi." Without noticing, Hazel's voice was soft talking about him following by a sigh.

"Someone has a crush." Dr. Jaeger teased her before starting to help washing the dishes.

Hazel help with taking the kids to bed and saying good bye to them because she was going to leave before dawn. She told them a few stories about the expeditions while they fell asleep and gave them a kiss in the forehead before leaving to the kitchen again and found only Grisha there with the book Eren had tried to hid and took a seat with him.

"What do you think about this?" He was calm looking through the pages. She sensed a bit of nostalgia.

"It left me thinking. If this is real, we know nothing about this world. There are a lot of possibilities and always the same questions. Where does the titans come from? What are their real purpose? Are they a weapon? Maybe we are not the only humans."

"Are you afraid?" He was serious now, with piercing look.

"I am, but I'm afraid of leaving this world without knowing the truth, of leaving all the people I care about, of not being able to free humanity."

"Hazel, you may be the one." He stood from the table and stroke her hair with a paternal smile. "I will tell you everything when the time comes." He left the book where Eren has hidden it and went to his room leaving Hazel full of doubts.

The one?

At morning she waked up, and found only Carla who was waiting for her with breakfast. Thanking and saying good bye to her, started her trip back.

"Good bye, sweetheart. We love you, take care please and come back as always." Carla watched her leave and blow a kiss in the air.

She rode back half day, the questions she said to Dr. Jaeger still bouncing in the back of her mind and wonder what does he mean yesterday.

Past noon, she finally got to the barracks, everything was oddly alone, she left her horse at the stable and with the bag of errands she went out looking for someone.

Walking to the training field, she started to heard a horde of screams and cheers. More closely, she found a bunch of soldiers in a circle and two figures were struggling in the floor fighting, but she couldn't see who they were. She stepped closer but none listened, next to her was her favorite bench and she climbed up to make everyone look at her.

"ENOUGH! EVERYONE, LINE UP IF YOU DON'T WANT TO RUN LAPS UNTIL SUNSET!"

The sudden scream made everyone turned their heads to her with wide eyes full of fear. She could now see who were the ones fighting. Miche was against the floor unable to move, both arms twisted over his back with a foot locking them, his face surprised for seeing her. Levi with his monotone face just an eyebrow raised up, arms crossed and foot over Miche's back.

"I said line up!" She made the cadets line up and salute her. She walked were the two were already cleaning their clothes from the dirt. "What the hell?" She exchange sight with both men, clearly a bit ashamed they got caught. "You mind to talk? Captain Zacharius? Ackerman?" She wanted to sound serious using their last names. She stumbled a bit when an arm passed through her back.

"You should have seen it, Hazel! Your shortie beat Miche, the strongest soldier." Hange was fangirling over Levi and teasing Miche.

"How did you called me, shitty glasses?" Levi gave a step forward with a growl but was stopped by Miche.

"Not here, dummy." Hazel whispered in her ear. "You two, to the Commander's office, now!"

"But, Hazel we..."

"I said now!" She interrupted Miche and pointed with her index finger to the main building. "Captain Zoe, you too."

The three walked to the main building like scolded kids and reluctantly. Leaving her as the only higher up, she walked to her bench and faced the cadets and the squad leaders lined up.

"I want the whole headquarters cleaned up before dinner. Squad leaders, coordinate everything."

Hazel left the soldiers panicked and hurried up to Erwin's office with the others. Not bothering to knock, she entered and found Hange and Levi discussing, Miche and Erwin looking bored at them from the desk. Everyone turned to face at her immediately.
