My dear sunshine:
We knew this day would come, but I trust you will get through it, because even if you don't admit this, you are the strongest of them all.
In another world, we might have had more time, own a little business, even rise a family and get to know the ocean, but let's be real, there are more important things right now than our wishes. The enemy is here, and the war is yet to begin.
I might not be there anymore, but you are and, Levi, please promise me you will use your abilities to win this. Fight for the ones who can't, fight for the fallen, fight for me, fight until the end, fight so others could dream.
Remember that you don't have to endure the pain by your own, there's people who will be willing to help you.
In the mean time you will have to do some things for me.
Hange has suffer in her past, so she will need you too. She might be crazy and sometimes she has stupid ideas, she needs a cool mind by her side to keep her tame, be her friend.
You need to learn to trust Erwin, he will cover your back if you do the same, but sometimes you will need to remind him to keep his feet in the ground, he is a big dreamer.
Someday, a teenager will come to you. In the outside he might appear strong and decided, but he is more reckless than you and more stubborn than me, also his actions are led by his emotions. He will be a spark of hope for the humanity, without him everything will be lost, he has the key to win the final battle. Whatever it takes, please, take care of Eren like he's a teacup.
I know it's a big weight, but you carry the wings of freedom on your back, if you look around, the people expect great things from you, my angel.
Never give up, I'll be waiting until we met again. I was happy the whole time I spent with you, I would never change a thing. Don't be sad, because now I will finally get to rest.
I love you, Levi.
The tears fell down his face reading once again the letter Hazel left for him, remembering her last moment in this world.
"At least I got to see you again." She said with exhausted voice between the gasp, her eyes mid open, and with her hand she caressed his face before the pinch in her heart made her flinched. "I'm sorry it has to be this way."
"Don't talk, Haze. You need to save your energy." Levi was holding her by the back into his arms, making her don't reach the floor. His tears threatening to fell, his hands shaking and the impotence ran his body. He put aside her hair from the face and with his fingers, he traced the scar in the forehead, the one she made when they fell in the woods after the contest. He gave up, his tears freely fell. "I'm sorry I couldn't protect you."
"Don't be silly... thanks to you, I got out the underground city and found a doctor, and also a life worth living." She grunted by the pain and her whole body started to relax. "Thank you, Levi."
His eyes went wide open, his heart was torn apart. The woman in his arms, that once has brought light to everyone's life, was gone, the heart that once beat without control had finally stopped. "Haze! Please, open your eyes!" He embrace the lifeless body of his lover, hiding his face in the crook of her neck, feeling what was left of her body warmness.
The whole courtyard witnessed of the sad and heartbreaking moment.
Setting the memory aside, he got up from the desk after saving the letter in his drawer. A lot has been happening since that day, the country was a mess and the higher ups were freaking out since the was fell. New fear invaded everyone.
Would that happen again?
Who is this enemy she talked about?
New hypothesis were made, no one should be trusted, but Levi knew he should trust his new friends, and in order to fight as she asked to, he will. He will end this new hell along with them.
He made his way to the field, with his goal in mind. He will embrace his title as the humanity's strongest soldier and do whatever it takes to end this new wicked era.
"Morning, shorty!" Hange was at Hazel's favorite bench watching the new cadets training when he got by her side with his arms crossed above his chest and his permanent scowl.
"You stink, have you ever take that stupid yellow shirt off?" He said in a sour tone, not taking care of his rudeness.
"You never take off that cravat, why would I take off the shirt she brought me?"
He clicked his tongue and both went silent, looking at the soldiers. "Sorry, at least clean it once in a while, four eyes."
"Heichou!" A voice broke the sadness of the atmosphere. The young woman came running to the place and made a salute to her higher ups once she was there. "Heichou, the team is already waiting for you at the woods for the training."
"I'll be there in a second, cadet Ral." He dismissed her and sat beside Hange sighing.
"I thought you didn't want a new team." She turned to see him with puzzled face.
"After all, Hazel managed to recruit the tops of the class and left the files at the office so I could take them as the new elite team."
"You better go."
"And you better made those traps work, don't waste the funds she gathered for your investigations."
⟿
Levi was sat alone against a wall in a dirty alley, embracing his legs and hiding his face with tears.
"Ackerman!"
He heard this known voice demanding for his attention. Disconcerted he wiped his face before looking up, a bright silhouette was in front of him. He gasped in surprise when it crouched at his height to look straight to him. Finally seeing her features the only thing that left his mouth was "Haze?" followed by a peaceful feeling within his chest.
Hazel, with a white robe, a warming smile and happiness in her eyes, was rounded by a bright energy. "It's been a long time, sunshine." She took one hand to caressed his face and he just closed his eyes accepting that long lost feeling of her touch on his skin.
"I've missed you so much."
"Don't lie to me, you've been very busy this past years." Hazel tried to ease the mood but he just stared at her with a scowl making her giggle. She placed her forehead against his, closing her eyes. "I've missed you too, brat. You did it so well, we are all so proud of you." She stood and extend her hand to him and helped to put on his feet.
He grabbed her hand and once at her height, he brought her closer embracing her by the waist and wait a few seconds while taking notice of her face, she was just the same as he remembered, then placing a hand on her neck, their lips met together. Nothing else mattered, the time froze around them, the same energy that emanated from her body was invading him now, letting him feel restored.
When both broke the kiss, their gazes found each other and they stood like that for a while.
"Want a ride?" Hazel told him unfolding her wings. "There are a lot of people waiting to see you." He rolled his eyes, but then faintly smiled inviting her to take his hand and drag him to a bright light.
『I want to thank you all to reach this point of my story, for all your support and for your loyalty on this.
It was fun to play with my imagination for a while and keep you entertained in the mean time.
I know it's not a very happy ending, but my main purpose was to not alter the original one in the most possible way.
THANK YOU, READERS. 』
