XXXIII: Promise me

"I'm tempted to say this was delicious." Hazel set the eating cutlery in her tray after finishing her dinner. Hange was surprised with wide eyes seeing she actually ate all the food this time.

"You could have let the new distribution for later, you know?" Erwin said before keeping eating his soup.

"As if I would do that, I already finished to teach them their place in the formation. They are almost ready." She was proud of her squad.

"How did it went with the others test leaders?"

"Hazel, why didn't you tell us you were... you know..." Miche was just arriving the table with his food in tray since the dinner has just begun, his face was intrigued expecting her answer. He muttered the word 'fucking' and while making the gesture with his hands referring to that word. "with Ackerman?"

This made everyone choked. Hange burster in laugh until her stomach hurt and tears were falling from her eyes. Hazel didn't blushed or got angry, she looked at Erwin letting him know that this was the result of her giving Levi a squad.

"I didn't knew I had to be spreading through all the headquarter my sexual life. Besides, I'm not doing such thing...yet." She whispered the last word just to Hange heard her and made her laugh again at the point she was out of air.

"Well, at least we now know your guy type. That's why you didn't gave me a chance. I'm really taller and better looking." Miche kept teasing her.

"You never asked, I might have dated you." Hazel followed his game making him blush. "But let's face it, I'm not your type. You like more the fruity girls." Hazel smirked saying that, the only one who got the joke was Hange, who couldn't stop laughing.

Just then, Nanaba sat beside Miche and he understood, getting reddish he knew he had to stop.

"What's so funny?" Nanaba settled in her seat and looked at Miche, who nervously turned to face his food not answering.

"You don't want to know." Hange managed to answer catching her breath.

Erwin cleared his throat finishing his meal. "To my office, Haze." He stood and walked away hoping she follow him.

Both left the mess hall leaving Nanaba trying to get some answers from Miche and Hange still with her belly sore.

"Hazel," Erwin started to speak looking through his large window facing his back to her, and sighed. "You know I gave up on my love in order to pursue my main goal: the truth about humanity and it's freedom."

Hazel was sitting silent in one of the chairs in front of his desk, watching and listening carefully. When he brought back his past about how he left the only woman he has ever loved and then she married his former best friend, the Commander of the Military Police, Nile, she felt a knot in the throat.

Is he going to ask me to give up too?

He finally came to his desk, also taking seat with his face laying low, she could see his eyes were crystalized by the ghost of his memory. He regained his posture. "Don't do what I did. It took me a long time to forgive myself. If it's necessary you should leave and spend what you have left with him. You've already done enough in this big team."

He touched her heart with his words, he never was this corny. She offered a tender smile in gratitude and reached for his hand squeezing it. "You just want to get rid of me, don't you? I appreciate your words, Erwin, but you know I won't leave you to take all the credit for breaking free the humanity." He knew she was joking and giggled a bit. "All of you are my family now, I wouldn't dare to leave, and Hange... that crazy one would kill me for sure."

"I get it. I'm just saying that's it's okay if you want to give love a chance, the Survey Corps would be a rough place to do it. If you're going to stay, then you should know that you need to stay focus and don't make any dumb decisions out the walls."

Levi was sitting in his usual table at the mess hall, Hange took her seat in front of him with careless attitude as always eating like a mess. It seemed odd to him that she wasn't with her best friend, so he waited silent for a couple minutes until clicked his tongue before speak reluctantly. "Where is Haze?"

Hange looked up with puzzled face, waiting if it was a joke but seeing his serious face, she knew it wasn't. "Again?... Levi we had this conversation before. It's been months since you know... she passed. Are you feeling okay?"

It hit him. He was screaming in the inside. He couldn't protected her in that expedition where she was attacked by a titan. The tears in his eyes fell like waterfalls.

He suddenly was crouching surrounded by darkness, he felt so lonely and guilty for not fulfilling his promise to Declan that he would protect her no matter what. He heard his voice at his back, a whisper. "Promise me, Levi"

Levi stood and turned around, he was now at the living room from their house at the underground city, Hazel was laying in the floor unconscious after having a heart attack. He crouched again beside her caressing her head. Still crying, he screamed her to wake.

Declan was opposite from him also looking at her and crying. "Levi, you take care of her. Promise me you will be with her until we meet again and I have a cure." Saying this he vanished, and again he was alone in the darkness.

Levi opened his eyes waking up from his nightmare, his breathing was accelerated as well as his pulse, his cheeks were wet unable to distinguish if they were tears or sweat.
