XLII: I love you

Declan was reading the newspaper in silence when Levi finally decided to get out the room in order to leave. "Good morning, Levi. Do you slept well?" Declan noticed him when he was passing the living room, and set his reading aside with a warm smile. Levi stood watching him with a distrustful face, even though they had let him stay the night. "Are you leaving already? Don't you want to stay for breakfast?"

"Thank you for letting me stay." With a sour tone, he went to open the door but Declan stopped him.

"Hey, it's okay if you want to leave, just remember you're welcome here anytime, okay?" He smiled from the couch and waved him good-bye. "Hazel better not see you leaving."

Levi clicked his tongue after exiting, he started to coming down the stairs of the entrance looking to the floor with his hands inside his pockets and bumped into someone in the last step. He lifted his head with an angry face ready to pick a fight with the careless brat that has hit him.

"Oh no!" His factions changed immediately at the sight of her getting down to pick up the items she had been carrying. Automatically he crouched and helped her. "Thanks. Where do you think you're going, I was about to make breakfast. Com'on." Hazel took him by the hand not letting him say anything and entered the house again.

Declan hid a laugh seeing him being pulled by his sister. "That was fast." Levi gave him a serious look, he knew that she will stopped him from leaving and reluctantly sat in the table. Declan took the seat beside him waiting for Hazel to serve the food. "You will get used to it. Maybe too much."

After Levi said to Declan he needed another plan, Hazel started to collapsed into the floor. He has never witness one of her heart attacks, so he ran and fell to his knees beside her. "Haze, listen to me, take a deep breath." He wrapped an arm below her neck.

Declan looked at Levi with tears in his eyes but with a smile. "Take care of her while I hide."

"You're insane, they will found you." Levi told him while Declan caressed her forehead. "It's the only option."

He felt desperate, Hazel was having a heart arrest and the Military Police would came in any minute. "Leave." Levi looked deep in Declan's eyes with determination. "Take the money and leave, I will take care of her, I promise. We will wait for you to come back."

Declan started to cry, and agreed. "I'll come back for you and the cure for her." Giving a kiss in her forehead and stroke Levi's hair, he stood up and after taking the money, he took the last glance of them before leaving. That was the last time they saw him.

After taking her to the healer's place he left to the stairs to see if Declan has made it and the caretakers confirmed it.

During Hazel's checkup, she asked Dr. Jaeger about the last time she saw him and told her that she was the one, but he just said it wasn't the time and he has things to do before telling his plan, letting her clueless once more just restocking her meds. Without insisting, she got back and found Levi sitting in the floor, looking straight to Declan's plaque. She made a sound with her boots while walking and he turned to see her with blanc face. She offered her hand to him and helped him stand. "Are you ready?" He just nodded and walked beside her, crossing the market to the edge of the city.

"How are you?" He asked her making her put a puzzled face. "I mean, how's your heart? Is everything alright? You never talk about it."

"You never ask." She said preparing the seat of the horse to start their trip, giving him her back and avoiding him to look at her face.

He came closer and make her turned to face him taking her by the shoulders. "I'm asking now. How are you?" His face was expressionless.

"I.., I'm fine, okay?" She turned to the horse again to avoid talking about the matter to him, she wasn't prepare to tell him about she was dying.

"It doesn't appear that way to me. Hange is very concern about you taking your meds all the time, also Erwin was a bit concerned and fine with the idea of you stayed for your checkup. There is something you haven't told me."

She sighed and went up the horse looking down to him. "You are not an idiot, Levi. I'm still ill, if not I wouldn't come to Shingashina once in a while. The med helps me in order to keep control the disease, but one day... they won't work anymore. Last month, the Dr. said it has evolved and had to increase the doses."

Levi felt the blood fall to his feet. "You're dying." He stated looking at her with troubled face. Her face showed pity and didn't respond just started to ride. He mounted his horse and rode behind her trying to assembled the facts.

They rode in silence to the barrack and left the horses under the attendant's care. Everything was alone while she walked in her office direction followed by Levi. Hazel don't even bothered to closed her door, he did it for her and reached for her hand pulling her, his hands reached her waist after they were facing each other.

"You're going to leave me." His face has no expression yet, but she could feel the concern and sadness in him.

"You're not the victim here." Her face was serious in spite the nervousness of having him so close. "I can't control it."

"You could, but you don't want to. You keep risking your life for everyone but yourself." He lowered his hands through her butt and her thighs lifting her. She couldn't escape now and she wrapped her legs around his waist. He was looking straight to her watering eyes. She gasped when her back hit the wall so he can stabilized the weight and get her more closer. "Haze..." He made a pause and look to her lips, then his hand went to cupped her face with the most loving eyes he have ever had. "I love you, can't you tell?"

The tears in her eyes finally fell and she let her head rest in his shoulder. He let her suited her head into the crook of his neck still crying and decided to carry her to bed, it has been a long day for all. Levi cuddled to ease her, stroking her hair and back. "Levi." He heard her saying against his chest. "I love you too." He knew it but the fact that she had said it made his heart skipped a beat.
