Hazel was glad that at least she got to make a new friend. A pretty eccentric one, but kind and attentive, wanting to know everything about her as they had dinner.
"I have to say I didn't think you would make it. Your body looks so tiny and fragile, but those moves were outstandingly fast when you made the guy fall."
"Heh. I used to have a good teacher." The thought of him caused her to sigh, feeling like her heart was heavy.
"So, what's your story?"
"I left the underground city some time ago."
The lady was astonished, wanting to know every detail of Hazel and her previous life. The girl was more than comfortable knowing someone was listening with such enthusiasm and asking questions about everything.
"Damn, girl. He had the guts to kick you out of your home. Sounds like a prick at first, but he gave you all the savings to get out and look out for your bro, hoping you find help to treat your condition." Each, laying on their beds, the weirdo giving it a deep thought. "Knowing how tough life is down there and all the risks he went through to get the money, I think he loved you enough to let you go."
"I- I guess." She replayed the scene in her head, and tears threatened to fall. "I was hurt with all he said, his face and the attitude. There was no option for me but to leave, so I did. There hasn't been a day without thinking back at it."
"Focus on the training and on not dying. It will make it more probable to get to see your idiot again."
"Thank you for listening. Sleep tight, Hange."
"Good night, baby."
Hazel often would remember the sad day she left. Getting to know she couldn't get any help was the first shocking event, but having Levi and Furlan at her side, at least she would have enjoyed their company until her ending day.
The thought of dying happy along with her boys was crashed into pieces with Levi's words just when everything was getting great between them.
The girl shed a tear in silence. She was so tired of the day, hitting her and falling asleep.
The training was hard, but as days went on, they gained condition and grew stronger.
Hazel followed every instruction of Dr. Grisha until the graduation day. Luckily, she made it through without mishaps in the following three years.
The trainers were taken aback by the little underground girl. At first, they wouldn't expect her to be of the top best cadets.
They said she was quick as lightning, cool-headed in stressful situations, allowing her to take the initiative, excellent in combat, and a good asset in teamwork.
As everyone knew, she chose the Survey Corps instead of the Military Police. With her comrades who decided to join as well, they arrived at the barracks.
"We finally did it, Hazel. Isn't this amazing? I can't wait to see a titan." Hange jumped in glee as they headed to the field for the welcome. "Oh, look who's there." She blushed as Commander Shadis approached the rookies, standing over the wood stage with the Section Commanders next to him.
"You still fancy him?" Hazel giggled, looking at her friend lost in her daydreaming.
"Recruits, get in line."
The fresh incomers took position and saluted their new leader.
"Welcome to the Survey Corps. I thank you in advance for choosing to give your lives to humanity. Remember the reason that brought you here, using it to carry you forward at all times. Squads will be assigned shortly."
