"Please, don't tell me he's..." The tears didn't let her continue drowning her throat.
Levi took her hands in reassurance. "No, Haze. He isn't in prison and he isn't dead. Declan finally went to the surface."
Levi had convinced him to leave, the saved money was enough to pay the pass fee and the citizenship just for one person. There, he wouldn't be under the jurisdiction of the Military Police.
"Did he promise he will come back?"
"And I promised him I would take care of you meanwhile." Levi crossed his arm over her shoulders, making it easier for her to fit her head in the gap of his neck. "You scared the hell out of me, brat. Don't do that again."
She tried to chuckle and sniffed the fluids in her nose, feeling safe with him at her side.
There was a little amount of savings now, Declan has taken a large part and they had to pay the healer for the attendance Hazel had needed. Starting from the bottom, Levi along with Furlan, his now business partner began to take more jobs, both were known for being unstoppable always running off the Military Police and getting the job done, and Hazel, had to double her work hours to gain more money.
Hazel's shift ended after the usual time, she was exhausted and just wanted to arrive home. It had been a long time since Levi doesn't pick her up, so as soon she dismissed her co-workers, the young one hurried to get dinner.
A few blocks away from her destination, she heard a cracking sound, like a chopping stone along with a metal wire effect. She scanned her surroundings in the hope to find the source of the said noise but the dim light of the city wasn't helping.
The sound repeated a couple of times until seeing a flying shadow flying over before landing in front of her. After the graceful appearance, Levi stood up from his crouching position.
"What the hell!? I almost have a heart attack." Feeling her heart skip a beat by the previous thrill, Hazel got to see that by his hips was hanging an ODM like the ones the Military Police 'use'. "It suits you, officer. You look just like a real one."
He rolled his eyes in annoyance at the mock, she knew how much Levi hate them. "I was looking for you. You took your time to make it back."
Helping her with the basket they resumed their way home.
"Oww, were you worried? It was a crowded day so it took me longer to clean up the mess."
"Tch. I wasn't worried, I'm just starving, you brat." He frowned trying to shake off her tease before entering and taking off his new toy.
The girl chuckled thinking how cute it was the way he constantly was worried for her sake, even if he deny it.
Furlan was sitting on the couch, peacefully reading a book when Levi went to the kitchen and began to prepare dinner. With his big and gentle grin, the tall guy welcomed her. "Good evening, Hazel. Rough day?"
She stopped noticing the two ODMs beside the closet of the living room taking off her shoes. "You can bet it was, how about you and your new toys?"
"Ahh... did you watch Levi fly? This guy is insane! He managed to use this stuff like he already had trained."
"I'm exceptional at everything I do." From the next room, Levi said in a proud tone.
"How humble of you."
"Tch. Take a bath, you smell like shit, Haze." The black-haired boy grumbled from his spot, frowning for them having fun.
After dinner, Furlan and Hazel were closely sitting on the couch, making it easy for them to look at the images of the book that he was reading before she arrived.
"I wish I could see the stars and feel the fresh air," she said looking at the image of little dots above what it mentioned was a forest.
"We will. With the ODM it will be easier to make the jobs and get paid." Furlan embraced her with one arm shortening the distance between them and kissing the top of her head, reminding her of something Declan would've done.
Levi, who was silent at the table taking tea saw the gesture and quickly stood up screaming and freaking out the others. "It's late, you two, go to bed!"
His hands were fists over the table and his head was hanging low facing the floor when he realized what have done. Turning his attention at them with a scowl, Levi finished to startling both, getting up and leaving to each one's room.
He was left alone trying to decipher what had happened, with an awful feeling like restlessness that was triggered by his partner's kind gesture to reassure the girl, an uncomfortable ache, and a burden in his chest.
Am I jealous?
The dubious one started to overthink the facts and ended up regretting letting Furlan live with them after his mother died, he tried to let it go and make his way to the room, but his rambling thoughts made him have a restless night.
When it came to feelings, Levi was naive. The firsts years he used to live with his mother in an unfitting place for a kid, the little he remembered was that the woman cared for him enough to give the boy everything they had, leading her to death.
Then his first savior, Kenny, came when he was about to follow Kuchel to death from days of starvation. The child had someone who took care of him again in an unorthodox way, turning him into a killing machine, or a 'monster', Levi used to think but Hazel, his number one fan, believed he was the best no matter what.
Despite how much Levi tried to show his mentor the worthy of proud he had become, no longer after, Kenny suddenly abandoned him.
The boy was capable to survive over the underground city's conditions with his inhuman abilities, sadly he didn't have the motivation to keep living. Often he stole food, wandering the dark streets on his own, searching for an easy target that didn't need to use his skills.
He remembered the first time he saw her, a tiny teen girl walking alone in the dim city, followed her and about to take her basket full of food. Something made stop himself, Hazel beamed a security aura, seeming she was ready to attack anyone who tried and fight her, making him wonder what she would be able to do to him, but also he noticed the fear and concern with the little tremble of her hesitating legs while she walked with the tightened grip around the basket.
She bumped with the men who almost killed her, causing his doubts to fade away, and went straight to help the girl in distress with no reward needed. His dreadful appearance made him decide it was better to keep unseen, conscious that he might scare her.
The second encounter with Hazel, nearly dying, he thought that was an illusion, an angel who will finally take him to rest in peace. Levi wasn't so wrong, though.
He found himself lost in her eyes that matched her name, her long lashes and faint freckles over her cheeks and something moved within his chest, the boy was speechless, glad that had been found.
The footsteps brought him back to reality and, once again, without expecting anything, he helped her.
The fact of letting him in was so twisted at first, but deep inside he desired to belong somewhere, to get rid of the dullness and pity he was carrying along, to leave behind the lack of motivation to live, and thanks to the siblings, slowly he began to feel the warm melting his heart.
At the time, Levi knew that love meant sacrifice, discipline, hard work, gratefulness, acceptance, and reciprocity.
It was hard to express his feelings but it didn't mean he didn't have any.
At the end of his mad thoughts, he was feeling angry at himself about couldn't be more open and expressive about how he felt for her, because he was more than sure that his Haze was special.
The mere thought of Furlan who had known her less time than him and was already able to show her affection, or anyone taking her away, was making that horrible sensation on his core arise again.
