Hazel was walking through the dim streets. Since she left the restaurant, the feeling of someone following her was making her feel anxious. She got hold of the blade that was inside her apron without taking it out while her other hand was holding the basket with the day's leftovers.
She kept on glancing behind her shoulder once in a while to look at her possible stalker, but each time there was nobody, just darkness.
Turning in a corner looking over her shoulder, she bumped into two old men that were leaning on the building wall. The one she accidentally hit on the chest looked down at her with a mischievous semblance.
"I'm so sorry, sir," apologizing, she took a quick look at him before trying to walk away but was stopped by the other one with his tight grip on her arm.
"Not so fast. Where do you think you're going, young girl?"
She let the basket fall to the floor and freed her limb from his grip with a quick motion following to make a cut with the knife making the old man gasp in agony and back off.
"You're going to pay for this." The first man threatened and throw himself on top of her starting to strangle her and making the knife fall away from her reach.
The tears accumulate on the rim of her eyes making her sight blur, and her thoughts started to disperse with the feeling of blacking out.
'Is this the end of all?'
A thud was heard coming from where the man with the cut was. Hazel made an effort to look from the corner of her eye at what had happened to catch a slim shadow taking the old man down with ease before kicking off the man from her.
When his hands left her sore neck, she started gasping, her lungs aching and pleading for air. Sitting up, Hazel turned to look at the men, both unconscious laying on the floor and no one else was there.
She took a minute to settle up her breathing and got up, taking her basket with the knife already inside and the food intact. Before taking her run home, she made sure once more there was no one else in the place.
Walking up the stairs to the house, she opened slightly the doorknob and stepped in hearing a click of a tongue from the living room right in front of her.
"You're late" The tall young man walked across the room and looked closely at her neck with a disapproving face. When he got closer, his hands went into fists in fury but he fell to his knees, allowing him to hug her gently.
"I'm fine." Hazel tried to reassure him not wanting him to worry about what had happened. With her tender smile and patting his hair, she cleared her throat to take his attention. "Declan, guess what I brought us for dinner."
Hazel's older brother took the basket from her after kissing her cheek to prepare the dinner while she took a deserved shower and changed her dirty dress. "Tonight somebody saved me, just like an angel. I didn't have the chance to see who it was, though." She noticed her brother got stiff and uneased.
After she told the story and finished their dinner, he got up to wash the dishes not looking at her, showing how displeased he was.
"You were lucky tonight. There aren't too many good people in this dipshit city, besides, you know your condition, you could die anytime." Declan made a pause to look at her with his worried but stern face. "Hazel, you promised me you would stay away from troubles if I let you help with our savings. You must be more careful, you're the only family I have left."
"I'm not going to die until we get to the surface. You just wait, we'll leave this hell sooner than we thought" Saying this, she ran to her room and returned with a little leather purse in her hands tossing the coins over the table. "The tips were good today."
