XXIV: Ride

Hazel reunited after lunch with the bunch of cadets to give the instructions. "I hope everyone is ready for this phase. Same dynamic as before, you have only 4 minutes now and there will be obstacles. Wait for the flare signals, I'll be watching from the center of the forest."

People was complaining for the short time she gave them. The leaders had already left to prepare the dummies and traps and she swiftly flew away with her ODM.

Levi had time to quickly review the plan and to settle that everyone knew their part.

He will cover the area from 11 to 1, being the fastest of all, he will be the one who can manage to cover the farthest and greatest area. Other two soldiers will round the circumference of the forest in opposite direction. Four will cover the front half of the forest, and the last two will cover from the center to the outside of the second half of the woods where Levi won't reach.

When the flare sign from Hazel came to sky, Levi gave them order to start. Levi leaded the other two through the forest, skipping the traps and taking down a couple dummies in their way. When he finally got sight of Hazel up in a branch watching their maneuvers, he commanded the two cadets to go to their assigned area.

He kept flying forward, making his way in the air passing beside the tree she was on and noticing she waved him goodbye. He focused and started to clean the area. Time was running down as he flew taking down titans and skipping traps everywhere.

When the flare sign came again to the sky, he stopped feeling his arms numb by the effort and tried to came back. He was at the farthest point of the woods and had run down on gas. Opting to walk back, he went to the ground to start his trip.

Minutes after, another flare sign was shoot, team four had started. Hoping someone could get sight of him, he walked staring up to the trees to catch someone flying around with no luck.

Hazel make the teams lined up to give the results after the four teams finished. She noticed that Levi's team was a bit anxious, and he wasn't there.

"Did he left?" She ask to the nearest soldier from his team.

"No, Captain. He hasn't come back. What if something has happened to him?"

"He just might have run out of gas, he went too far into the forest." One of the leaders suggested her.

"It will get dark soon, we should go get him back".

Hazel left the cadets waiting while she and other two leaders spread and look for him. She went to the last place she saw him, the big center tree, she saw him from afar walking removing branches and leaves out of his way.

"Want a ride?" She screamed from the top of the tree branch.

He turn his head looking for her in every direction until he saw her sat in the branch with a grin making fun of him.

"Just get me out of here, brat. There are a lot of bugs and dirt."

She jumped to the ground and give him her back. "C'mon, jump up."

"No way. Give me you gas." He tried to reach for her bottles of gas but she stopped him giving a slap in his hand.

"That's what you get for running out of gas, also I'll have to take you off points for making me came to rescuing you. Don't make me wait."

He growled and jumped to her back with no other option left. She flew with gracious even though the extra weight, skipping the branches and almost reaching the edge of the forest. "Wait." Levi interfered with the aim of the hook making Hazel to fail in her next target. Both fall to the ground rolling, getting some scratches and getting dirty. When they stopped rolling in the ground, she was against the ground and he on top of her. Growling in pain he lifted up his upper body with his elbows leaving their faces inches apart.

"Are you okay?" He was concerned for her, looking at the cut in her forehead.

"What was that, genius?" She said confused and exasperated.

They were feet away from the edge now and the soldiers that were waiting heard the noise they did by falling. They found them in a very compromising position that some of them gasp when saw them. The two get up really fast, blushing as hell and taking the dirt off their clothes.

"Captain, are you okay? You need to take care of that cut."

"I'm fine. The hook broke" She lied to the leader who approached them to help. She gave a disappointed look to Levi and walk away to where she was going to give the results. Levi joined his team covering his embarrassment with his usual neutral face.

"Thanks for waiting. Now that we are complete, this contest was for you, possible leaders, to know the value of trusting your team, know each other and how it help you to leading them. Even though I gave you less time this second phase, all the teams increased their numbers. As every contest, there has to be one winner. Congratulations, team Levi, you were the team with the most killings."

The team celebrate hugging each other and screaming in victory, Levi who stood with his arms crossed got short hugs from his companions. The rest of the teams clapped in acknowledge, and started to whispering and giggling between them.

"That's not the only thing he won."

"What were they doing? Are they dating?"

Levi was about to confront them before Hazel got their attention again. "Good job, everyone. You can go now, we'll meet tomorrow."

Before he could escape from there, one of his team mates grab him from the arm in order to lead him with the group.
