22: lay low

Hawks nodded to Toya that the man was still on the roof of the building, still holding Y/N close to his chest.

"You want me to finish him?" Dabi asked, rolling out his shoulders and cracking his knuckles.

"Did he hurt you?" Hawks asked the girl, who was still clearly panicking.

"N-no," Y/N stuttered out, looking up at Hawks with wide and tearful eyes. "What the fuck just happened, Keigo?"

"I'll explain later," Hawks looked at the damage on her legs and cursed himself for not making her throw on sweatpants before they left the hotel. 

Y/N lifted a shaky hand and touched a welt on his cheek making Hawks wince slightly. "Are you okay?"

"Don't worry about me. Can you walk?" He asked her gently and she shook her head while looking away from him. "That's alright, kid, don't worry about it."

 He picked Y/N up bridal style and cradled her against his chest.

"I'm fine too, thanks for asking," Toya commented sarcastically and Hawks just rolled his eyes at him. "Well, we're fucked."

"Let's just worry about getting out of here and to the safe house," Hawks felt Y/N shake in his arms and he clenched his jaw and held her tighter against his chest. There was an immense amount of guilt that washed over him and made his head heavy with shame.

He should have never brought Y/N into his job. This is why he always kept Allison out of it and since Y/N was so supportive of his job... he let her get too close.

"Don't do that," Toya said to him as they walked back to the hotel to get the car and their bags. 

"Do what?"

"Blame yourself for what just happened. No one could've guessed that this whole plan would go tits up," Toya looked at his friend lazily, hands stuffed in his pockets as they walked. "And that girl won't walk away from you."

Toya drove while Y/N and Hawks were in the back seat so Hawks could tend to her cuts and bruises. It was mostly silent besides the soft sounds of the early morning radio.

Y/N drew in a sharp breath as Hawks started cleaning out the gravel from her palms from when she tried to break her falls.

"Almost done," He said lowly, bringing her even closer to him to inspect her palms. "You're doing so well, sunflower." He almost smiled to himself as Y/N blushed at his praise. 

His eyes skated across Y/N's legs which were wrapped in bandages and some spots were already blood-soaked. Hawks sighed softly, taking the bandage and wrapping Y/N's delicate hands. The sun was rising over there horizon and Y/N's eyelids were slowly shutting as her head leant on the headrest and her legs in Hawks' lap.

"You know, Y/N, when I met you I thought you were annoying and your quirk was dumb." Toya started his sentence and Y/N glared at him playfully.

"And?" She prompted. 

"And you are," Toya said, earning a look from Hawks and a small giggle from Y/N. "But when I saw you hurling yourself from roof to roof and attempting to drop a cinder block on a man's head, I realized you weren't as weak as I thought you were."

"Thank you," Y/M smiled faintly at the backhanded compliment, knowing that he meant well. "Keigo, can I use you as a pillow?"

Hawks nodded as Y/N used his thigh as a pillow, knowing she couldn't lean on him because of his wings. He smoothed her hair while looking out the window at the passing cars.

"So now what?" Y/N asked and Toya grunted.

"To hell if we know." Toya gripped the steering wheel. "I'm out of the villaining game for sure now that they know I'm a rat."

"Which was my grand plan the whole time," Hawks joked sarcastically to his friend, who glared at him in return. "We got enough information on Collector for Endeavor to take him down...it's just a matter of when."

"So we just lay low until this whole thing blows over?" Y/N questioned groggily, clearly falling asleep as she was speaking.

Hawks smiled to himself. Cute.

"Yeah. I know a place, kid. You just get as much rest as you need." Hawks looked down at the girl and smiled softly at her. She was still wearing his hero jacket which was clearly oversized on her. Just the sight of her in that jacket made him blush slightly.

"Okay," She paused and looked up at the hero. "Thank you for keeping your promise, Keigo."

He chuckled lightly, taking his own feather that was around her neck between his fingers. "Thank you for trusting me."

Y/N smiled back, taking his hand and held it between hers, cradling it against her face. She turned her head and closed her eyes so she could sleep. Hawks' face turned a bright red as he quickly looked out the window to calm himself.

"You two are literally a walking cliche." Toya sneered. "I will fucking projectile vomit on the both of you, I swear to god."
