Read Other Chick Lit Stories

Chick Lit or young women's literature; what I've learned as I do research writing tips on this genre, one thing always comes up; Read other chicklit stories written by famous writers. Pwede na rin siguro yung hindi gaanong famous. Hahaha!

I know nothing much about chick lit before. All I know is, I see a book, I read the title, I checked the story blurb in that back cover, I liked it, I bought it. That's how I am with books, up until I saw The Devil Wears Prada, that's when I realized it was a chick lit novel.

It was written by Lauren Weisberger. She's #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Devil Wears Prada, written in 2003, which was published in forty different languages and was made into a major motion picture in 2006 starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.  Will you look at that?

Well, there was another one before that, The Bridget Jones's Diary was also a chick lit, written by Helen Fielding in 1996, it was granted the momentous honor of being the first Chick Lit novel. This novel was also transformed into a movie in 2001, starring Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant.

Impressive, is it? Then the thought comes in, Am I gonna be as good as them? Will my novel be recognized? Well, you'll never know, right? The important thing is, if you keep on reading a book in a genre you're interested in, you'll learn a lot from the writer, then you can write a novel. Since we are compiling tips for chick lit, then I will recommend you read chicklit, too.

We Filipinos have some good, if not the best, writers, too. As I surfed the net, I found these famous names in chick lit and romance genre; Mina V. Esguerra, Chrissie Peria, Stella Torres, Agay Llanera are a few to mention.

They are good writers, if I am going to base my analysis on comments of their readers, they are good, really good. But I'm not one to do so, I'd rather read it... well, they do not disappoint their readers. All I can say is they are awesome.

Palagi ko na lang iniisip ang kasabihang, "The more you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you will go." With that said, I learned a few things here and there. I can now say, I may be able to write one too myself, soon.

So, readers and aspiring chick lit writers, do not be afraid to read a lot of chick lit stories or novels to learn a few techniques from the writers. As you do such, you will eventually find a style of your own. You'll be surprised what kind of plot you can come up with.

Just keep your eyes peeled, malay n'yo, bukas makalawa, published writer na rin kayo. And the next thing you know, nasa widescreen na.
