Know your genre and your target readers
Just a little refresher, if we had forgotten it. When we write a story, may it be a novel or a short story, we need to know what is more important.
Sometimes, we get into our writing and we totally forgot what kind of genre it is and who are our target readers.
In writing a Chick Lit novel, we should be focusing on our Heroine. Her strengths, her weaknesses, her dreams, achievements, failures, and victories. We should not forget her background whether it was just an ordinary story or a one of a kind.
Most of us Chicklit writers, sometimes started off really strong on our main female character. We showcase her strength, willpower, and her gusto to be on the top.
As we go further with our story, it ended up being a romance novel. Why? Because we forget to focus on our genre, or we are not familiar with the genre we are trying. It is very sad at times when we are so sure that we are on top of it then came to realize we are too far from what we are trying to achieve.
There were also those times when we are almost done with our story, then we realize that we lost half, if not all, of our readers, because we veering out of our genre and our Heroine's character are becoming weak... more like a damsel in distress now, not a strong independent woman who can face the world using her talents and wits.
That's why it is really important to know our genre too well and who are our target readers.
