Maya's POV
*2 weeks later*
"Herrera you ready?" I called across the station.
"Let's go," she said, climbing into to drivers seat of the Aid car.
"Gibson you're in charge," I shouted before I closed the door on my side.
The past two weeks had been rough. I'd thrown myself into work in the hopes of moving on from Elva. I'd put a brave face on, pretending to everyone around me that I was ok. The truth was I wasn't. I couldn't get this little girl out of my head.
I'd been snappy with people for no reason. I'd been running a lot more than usual. Carina had been amazing, doing everything she could to try and make me feel better. In an attempt to keep myself busy, not that my job was ever quiet, I'd decided to join Andy on one of the vaccine days for the homeless. Before I became captain, it was mine and Andy's job to go out and offer free vaccines to the homeless people in the community. We used to enjoy these days, they were always a good chance for us to have a catch up.
We spent the ride to one of our usual spots discussing Andy and Sullivan's new apartment.
We arrived at one of my brothers old spots. This bridge always brought back memories. Especially since he painted the dove with the sprays I gave him.Andy parked up.
"You okay?" She asked, checking I was alright.
"I'm good. Let's get vaccinating," I said, pushing that emotion to one side.
Getting out and grabbing the kit we needed, we started to make our way over to a group of people. We never normally had any issues, they were usually extremely grateful.
"Hi we're from Seattle Fire Department, Station 19," I introduced.
We were chatting away to some of the people and doing a few checkups when a lady pulled me to one side.
"Hi, I'm Captain Bishop, is there something I can help you with?" I asked her.
"Yeah. There's a kid. She's been hanging round here about two weeks now. She don't look good. Think you should take a look," she told us.
I glanced at Andy. With just a look and without speaking we headed in the direction the lady pointed in. Further under the bridge.
I had a knot in my stomach. I didn't know what we were walking towards or what we'd be faced with.
I had terrible feeling though.
Elva's POV
I made a mistake leaving the foster home. I thought I'd be safer. I thought I was stronger.
It was so cold. Especially at night. It was so so cold. I didn't have any money. I couldn't get food. Every now and again when one of the grownups got some they'd share it.
I could tell something wasn't right with me though. I felt really weak. I was getting tired of fighting as well. I just wanted it to stop.
I heard a door slam. Looking over, I could see an Aid car. My heart gave a thump. Maya.
I stopped myself getting my hopes up instantly. It wasn't going to be her. Even if it was, I didn't want to see her. Well, I didn't want her to see me. She didn't need to see me like this.
I didn't need anyone to see me, especially people who might try and contact social services.I tried to cover myself up with the blanket but it was so small and ripped.
I snook a glance back back at the aid car. I could see people walking in my direction. I had two choices. I could either hide or try to make a run for it.
They were getting closer.I grabbed Bobby and ran.
I was running for about 10 seconds before I felt somebody's arms around me.
Authors POV.
