Maya POV
"What're we going to do with Elva tomorrow?" I asked Carina that evening.
Carina, my mom and I were sat around the dining table having a glass of wine since Elva had gone to bed a little while ago.
"She can come to the hospital, everyone's kids are in at the minute because schools out," Carina replied.
"She's not the biggest fan though is she?" I sighed.
"Can she not go to the station with you?" Carina replied.
"No, I've got a meeting with the chief in the morning and I want to get out on as many calls as possible while I've been off for a week," I explained.
"I can watch her?" My mom suggested, taking Carina and I by surprise.
I glanced at Carina and raised my eyebrow.
She looked at me and shrugged.
"She's warmed up to me a lot more," my mom pointed out.
I thought about it, Elva had sat with my mom this evening for her bedtime story and she'd let my mom help her choose her ice cream earlier.
"Are you sure?" I asked, not wanting to impose on my mom either.
"Of course, I'm free all day. It will give me something to do," she smiled.
"Thank you, you can always drop her at the station or hospital if it gets too much," I told her.
"You can just get them to page me at reception," Carina added.
"Girls we'll be fine," she assured.
"Thank you so much," Carina said gratefully, taking a sip of her wine.
We finished our drinks and decided it was our bedtime as well. After saying goodnight to my mom, Carina and I crept into our bedroom, careful not to wake Elva who was sprawled out in the middle of our bed.
"Well she looks comfy," Carina whispered, pointing to the little starfish on the bed.
We quickly stripped of and changed into pyjamas and gently got ourselves in bed either side of Elvie.
"Do you think she'll be okay with my mom?" I asked Carina when she turned the lamp off. I lay in the darkness, staring at the shadowy ceiling.
"I think so don't you?" Carina whispered back, laying on her side and managing to reach over Elva to trace her fingers down my arm.
"I hope so but she's not known her that long," I pointed out.
"Who? Elva or your momma?"
"Both," I chuckled.
"This is the best way to get them properly acquainted," Carina explained quietly.
"She'll ring one of us if there's any problems," she added, reaching to squeeze my hand.
I lay quietly, thinking to myself.
"Get some sleep bellina, you're up early tomorrow," she said.
"So are you," I replied.
"But I'm not the one potentially running into burning buildings," she smirked, pushing up on her arm to lean and kiss me goodnight.
"Sleep well bella," Carina whispered.
"Mommy!" Elva cried, gripping onto my arm in an attempt to stop me leaving for work.
Carina had managed to sneak away earlier as she had some appointments first thing.
