Maya POV

I surprisingly woke up on Christmas morning before Elva. Maybe we'll get the 5am wake-up call next year when she realises how exciting it al really is.

As I lay there in bed waiting for either Carina or Elva to wake up, my mind drifted to Winter.

I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling, hoping that this child, who I didn't even know, would also be waking up in a warm bed, to loving presents and a fun-filled day

I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling, hoping that this child, who I didn't even know, would also be waking up in a warm bed, to loving presents and a fun-filled day.
However it was either my mind going to the worst case scenario or my mothering instinct that made me doubt that was the case.

My mothering instinct.

Never in my wildest dreams did I believe that I'd ever experience that.

I took a deep inhale and slowly let it out, aiming to calm my parasympathetic nervous system so my heart would stop racing.

"MOMMY,"

"MAMA"

"MOMMY IT'S CHRISTMAS,"

"MAMA WAKE UP!"

Elva always knew when her mommy needed a distraction from her mind and I'd always be secretly grateful.

"Come on babe, I think our baby is awake," I laughed lightly, gently shaking Carina's side to wake her up.

Our bedroom door flew open and our excited little girl ran in, her hair all over the place and pyjamas all wrinkled.

I pushed myself up to sit against the headboard of the bed.

"Hi bubba," I grinned, laughing as she pulled herself up onto our bed.

"Mama wake up!" Elva whined, practically climbing on top of Carina.

"Hmmm I'm awake," Carina yawned, her eyes still closed.

"Mamaaaa," Elva repeated, getting frustrated.

"Hmm si si," Carina murmured still half asleep.

"Mommy," Elva said, looking at me for help as she sat back on her knees in the middle of the bed.

"Shh it's okay bub, you're mama's not a morning person," I chuckled, reaching out and squeezing her hand.

"Carina babe, you might wanna wake up. I think Santa's been," I said, squeezing stroking her arm lightly.

"Mama wake up!" Elva added.

Finally Carina opened her eyes to be met with an eager seven year old.

"Buongiorno bambina," she smiled.

"Mama it's Christmas and you're sleeping," Elva said dramatically.

"I'm sorry bella, I'm awake now," she yawned.

"It's Christmas Day," Elva said again.

"We know Elvie, come give your mommy a Christmas snuggle," I said, holding open my arms for her.
