KABANATA I
Third Person's POV
The warmth of the afternoon sun filtered through the leaves, casting dappled golden patterns across the pages of the thick, weathered book she held.
She was deep into reading her book about warlocks, their ancient magic, and their ever-changing allegiances, engrossed in the mystery and power they wielded when the murmurs began.
At first, she ignored them, her mind determined to drown out the hushed whispers carried by the wind. But the words, laced with venom, wrapped around her like a snake, their sharp edges slicing through her concentration.
Sinasadya pa nila iyong lakasan upang marinig niya.
Their laughter was cruel, their disdain so natural that they didn't care whether she heard them or not—And why would they? She was nothing to them. A curse, an anomaly, an embarrassment to this family. A monster.
She walked past them, her face expressionless, her steps steady. As if they were nothing more than air for her.
The winding corridors of the mansion stretched before her, but she turned toward the attic stairs. It was the only place where their eyes wouldn't follow.
The room was small, cramped, and dust-choked, with its cracked wooden floor and brittle, rusted furniture. It was a forgotten space in a grand mansion, but to Everly, it was hers. The only place in this cursed house where she could pretend she had some peace.
If not for her, Everly would have had nothing.
Slumping onto the old chair by her room's window, she reopened another book. Magic. Warlocks. Curses. It was an escape, and yet, also a mirror of reality.
The disease was spreading like a relentless tide, consuming warlocks, wolves, and even vampires in its grasp. The dark coven, a group of dark warlocks, is said to be the one that spread the disease. And despite the relentless efforts of scholars and doctors all over Grand Orleas, no cure had ever been found.
