RIVER POV
I spun around in my chair. It was nearing the end of my shift and I was bored.
"Mathews, captain wants you in his office." Jane, a fellow officer informed me.
"Okie dokie." I said getting up.
"You free tonight." She stopped me.
Jane and I once had an on and off thing going on. Just casual, nothing serious but she was now engaged. If there was one thing I didn't do, was mess around with people's relationships. Cheating was to me, the most degrading act one could commit while in a relationship. That and abuse of any kind. You just don't hurt your significant other like that. You don't belittle their feelings and make them feel like they're not good enough. It can ruin someone's self esteem, bring about trust issues and insecurities.
"Like I said before, I'm not doing that with you anymore." With that, I walked to the captain's office.
I knocked on the door and peeked my head in.
"Sit down, Matthews." He gruffly ordered.
I did so quickly. I wasn't afraid of him, I just wasn't in the mood for one of his long talks about my recklessness. In my six months on the force, I was known for taking risks. The faster this was over, the better.
"Yes, sir?" I asked after he didn't say anything. The man was just staring at me.
"Where were you last night?"
Ah, so that's what this is about.
"At The friendly Bean. Why?" I replied casually.
"I was egged last night, Matthews." He answered. "Some stupid idiot, decided that it would be funny."
"Someone threw eggs on you, captain?" I gasped dramatically.
He huffed. "Not on me, on my house. Several cartoons in fact."
I shook my head. "Teenagers, I tell you. No ambitions what so ever."
He was eyeing me carefully. Everyone in this town knew I was a natural pain in the ass. I was suspended in school more time than I could remember. The only reason I wasn't expelled was because my Ma was known for her cafe and really liked around here. Apparently she was a top student, just like Ryan. I mean, I wasn't stupid, I went to college and got my Bachelor's degree in criminal justice. I just had a knack for getting into trouble. Somehow, they still let me join the police force.
"I'm going to ask one last time," His eyes looked into mine. "Where were you?"
Luckily for me, I didn't cower easily. "The cafe. Karaoke night. With my brother and best friend."
"I don't like you, Matthews." He said after a while. "You're a good officer but a damn pain!" He slammed his hand on his desk.
One of his picture frames fell. With a smile, I reached to pick it up. I turned it to see him and his wife. She was a beautiful African woman. How he landed this lady, was beyond me. I met her a few times and she was pleasant and kind. Nothing like captain Anderson was.
"Here you go." I kept my smile on just to agitate him some more.
"Get out! Your shift just ended."
"Aye aye, captain." I saluted. "Who lives in a pineapple under the sea." I sang on my way out.
I could hear him cursing under his breathe.

After I changed out of my uniform, I made to leave when someone came up to me.
