RIVER POV
My phone rang, waking me up. I rushed to get it before it woke Kailee beside me.
"Hello?" I answered groggily, without checking the time or name on the screen.
"Get your ass down here, Matthews. We have another body." Captain voice boomed through my phone.
I pulled it away, cringing at his loudness. "Yeah, okay."
I slowly sat up, still half asleep. Man, it's only 3am, I noted from the clock on the wall. An incoming text of the address to the crime scene came in.
"Riv?" Kailee called out, reaching for me with her eyes still closed.
I leaned over and kissed her forehead. "Your dad called, I have to go in."
"Can't it wait?" She revealed her amber eyes to me then.
"Someone else was murdered." I kissed her again. "Go back to sleep."
I got dressed and noticed she was sitting up in bed when I came back.
"I don't like this." She watched me with an adorable pout. "Promise me you'll be careful."
"I promise, baby." I went to kiss her goodbye. "Rest, okay? I'll see you later."
Kailee nodded and I covered her body with the blanket. I kissed her cheek on more time before leaving the room.
I made my way around the house, ensuring everything was locked properly. I did so before bed but checked again.
I'm gonna get her a dog.
I got to the crime scene, finding Captain and a few other officers along with forensic. I walked near him and he started to fill me in. Pretty much the same thing as before, only this time they got him on camera.
The security at the apartment building let us watch the tape. He was careful, a hat and hood over his head that he kept bent. He knew exactly where the cameras were in other to avoid them. It didn't show much to get us a good lead.
"Five kids and five adults now. Did you find anything else?" I asked. "Hey where's Benson and Wyatt?" I looked around not seeing them.
"I didn't call them, I don't trust anyone at this point. Security also said he had on our shirt inside before zipping up his jacket. But he didn't get a good look at him." He informed.
"How the fu-aahh." I stuttered, after I realise who this was. Captain narrowed his eyes at me. "Frick does he not see him." I finished.
He shook his head before walking away. "Let's head to the station. We'll regroup." He threw, without looking back.
After going over and over the video and lack of evidence, I was heading to the lockers. Benson walked into me, knocking me against a wall.
"Watch it." I sneered angrily. I was tired and my head was a mess.
"Or what? You gonna run to the boss? Just because you're dating his daughter doesn't mean you're shit around here, Matthews." He hissed, pointing at me and I noticed the tattoo on his wrist. "You'll get what's coming for you." He bumped my shoulder and walked off.
"Asswipe." I proceeded to get my wallet I had left in there, and headed for lunch.
I got Kailee and I burgers and fries and headed to the school. On my way in, I saw Cam sitting outside. A girl I didn't recognise beside her and both of them laughing, Bri opposite them. She had a deep frown on her face as she stared down at her food. Normally I'd go say 'hi' but not today. I didn't want to walk in on whatever that was.
I sped walked to Kailee's classroom, scowling when I saw that same woman in here from last time. I was glad the door was at least opened. "Hey, baby." I swallowed my jealousy and went to her.
I felt that familiar flutter in my tummy when I saw her eyes lit up. "Hi." She met me halfway, rewarding my presence with a gentle kiss. "You bought me food?" She grabbed the bag from me.
"Yeah, I wasn't sure you brought anything." I placed a hand around her waist.
A throat cleared and both our heads turned to the enemy. "I'll leave you guys alone. Thanks for listening to me rant, Kailee." She brushed her fingertips against my girl's arm as she passed by, and I resisted the urge to slap it away.
I instinctively pulled her closer to me with the hand on her waist. My eyes shot daggers on her back as she walked out.
"Why was she here?" I asked, turning to Kailee. "I missed you." I added.
Moving away from me, she placed the bag down. She took out her fries and leaned against her desk, popping one in her mouth. "I missed you too, you look hot in uniform." She openly checked me out. "And she was telling me about some parents or something. I'm not sure, wasn't really paying attention. Are you eating with me?"
I nodded my head, my frown not leaving. "But why did she come to you?"
"Oh, stop." She rolled her eyes, placing the food down. "You have nothing, absolutely nothing to worry about." She hopped on her desk and my eyes watched her skirt ride up her thighs. "Lock the door and pull the curtain over the glass."
I did as told then went to stand between her legs, hands on her waist. "Are we gonna do stuff?" I grinned.
She laughed, throwing her head back and for those few seconds, I was brought back to the first time I saw her. Only this time, like many other times, I was graced with the melodic sound.
"No, I just don't want any fast ass students peeping in." She placed her hands on my chest.
I pouted but understood, this was her work place. "Can I have half of your burger then? I see the empty container you have there." I jutted my chin towards it where it sat on her desk. "You already ate."
Kailee smiled my favorite smile and gave me the food. As we ate in a comfortable silence, my mind drifted to the events earlier on. From the crime scene to Benson. I was a little scared, well, a lot scared. They could go after anyone really. My eyes found Kailee, watching as she munched on fries while reading over some work.
She must have felt eyes on her because she looked up. "What? Why are you looking at me like that?" She smiled shyly.
I smiled endearingly at her, her being shy was cute. "You're heart stopping."
She leaned back in her chair. "That's the same thing you told me on our first date."
"I meant it then and I mean it now." I grabbed her chair and rolled her to me.
One hand rested on my neck, the other on my thigh as she gazed at me intently. "You look worried, Riv." She said quietly. "Is it work?" I nodded. "Wanna talk about it?" I shook my head in the negative. "What do you want then?" Her hands started to caress my face and I leaned into her touch. Her hands were so soft.
"Just you. Always you." I whispered before taking her bottom lip between my teeth. Then I kissed her fully on her lips.
After our make out session, I went back to work. Meeting Wyatt, on the way in.
"Had a nice lunch?" He asked.
"Uh, yeah. You?"
"Yeah. Were you at the scene early this morning?"
I nodded. "Yeah."
"He trusts you, I know he didn't like you much before." He laughed as we entered the building.
I chuckled lightly. "He still doesn't."
"Come on, partner." He patted my back. "Hopefully we hurry through the end of this shift."
I followed him in, already wanting to go home.
