With his hands filled with anything he could find that would burn in the fire, he began to walk back. Getting closer, he just saw small glimpses of her and Sumo. Sumo seemed to really like her, he was practically all over the girl. His dad used to say that all the good people were dead, that they were the first ones to die, but she was still here.
To Tom she seemed alright, but with that he knew it was only a matter of time till she met her end just like everyone else. "Here, I got twigs and papers. This should be enough." Tom spoke making the three turn around. After making a small crease in the in dirt, Tom placed his findings in it carefully, leaving some on the side for later.
"Do you have a battery or anything?" She asked looking at him while they crouched down next to each other. "Yeah." He said quietly going into his backpack to dig for them, taking one out and handing it to her carefully. "Why do you need it?" Tom was very curious, wondering why in the world she needed a battery. "This is like the only way I know how to make a fire."
"With a battery?" He questioned looking a bit confused. "And a gum wrapper." Juliet added, taking out a wrapper from the pocket of her backpack. Ever since she learned this, she always made sure to pick up gum or him wrappers, only the ones with the foil though. Letting out a small chuckle in disbelief he just watched on. Back at home they taught him a different way.
She seemed to be in deep concentration, since she didn't have any scissors she just ripped it very carefully. Folding the skinny strip in a certain way that it kinda confused him. Bringing her hand down to the paper and sticks, she brought the metallic sides to the positive and negative parts instantly fire caught in into the middle. Since it went out quickly, she made sure to place it into the little pit as fast as she could.
"See? An actual fire." She said sounding very proud of herself as the fire grew. Tom couldn't lie, he was a bit impressed. "Uh-w-who taught you that?" The boy asked with curiosity, he was just trying to make conversation, surprisingly. "My friend." Juliet answered with a small smile. Tom knew, she didn't have to say it and he didn't have to ask, it was obvious whoever that friend was had died. It only made sense, because they would've been with her right now.
Moving away, he sat on his blanket, taking off his jacket to use as some sort of pillow. He wasn't going to lay down yet, but it was just nice to have it ready. The sun went down quickly while they were too busy trying to get the fire started. Now it was completely dark. "Sumos a good dog, how'd you find him?" She questioned sitting down on her blanket as well, her legs behind held against her chest.
"He just found me, he attacked me two times. But he's been following me ever since, he's good to have around." The boy said feeling the dog lay next to him. "What about Daisy?" To Tom she didn't seem all that nice, she was tough, and looked really mean. Juliet however thought she was the sweetest, Daisy was her little baby. "Well originally she wasn't mine. She was someone else's that I knew. But stuff happened and we got split up. Then I found her, saved her from the revenants. That was a while ago."
Looking down at the dog, Tom slightly glared. "I don't think she likes me..." he commented making the girl slightly chuckle. "Yeah she doesn't, she likes Sumo though." Juliet said while giving her dog a pat on the head. Tom had a feeling that Daisy could sense his hostility towards Juliet. Then it went back to awkward silence, the slight crackling of the fire was all that they could hear.
"S-so, Tom. You have a last name?" It was a weird question, she just wanted to know. Not a lot of people have out last names. "McKay." He answered bluntly. Instantly, her eyebrows rose up. "Wow, cool." Juliet praise, she really liked that name. She was a sucker for good names, McKay sounded cool to her. "It's just a name..." Tom said not knowing what was so special about it. "I won't call you Tom, I'll call you McKay instead." Informed the girl, completely ignoring his comment. "What's yours?"
"Valentine." Juliet said with a smile, she liked her name. By the look on his face, he wasn't so fond of it. "That's stupid." Tom commented with a small laugh. Instantly she let out a small gasp "what? No it's not." She defended with a small glare. "Valentine? Like the holiday?" That's the only thing Tom could think of when he thought about her last name. "Huh?" Never in her life has she heard of that being a holiday, she thought there was only one that people celebrated back then. "Yeah...a holiday. Valentine's Day?"
All she did was shake her head "I thought there was only Christmas Day. I didn't know there was a Valentine's Day before the fall..." Juliet informed, the only reason she knew about Christmas was it was almost all the adults favorites. Older people would say how much they miss it. "There was a lot of days...a lot of holidays...I guess they were just bored..."
"What was it for? People told me that Christmas was for gifts, family and kids. So what was Valentine's Day?" Now she was very curious "Uh—my mom told me it's for people who are married, or who like each other. I guess they celebrate their sagnifcant other, like get them flowers and chocolates and shit like that. My dad and mom did that. Of course they didn't know when but, I guess they just celebrated whenever they felt the holiday was close...it didn't have to be for couples, it could be for friends too."
"Wow..." she said with shock, she'd never heard of anything like that before, a whole day to celebrate someone you liked, or just celebrate your companions. So that made Daisy her Valentine now that she thought about it. "Do you know what day it was?" Juliet asked leaning a bit forward in excitement. "February fifteenth or fourteen, one of the two."
"Hmm, my names not so bad." Juliet said with a shrug of her shoulders "kinda, it's just weird." Tom told her, looking at the fire. After a while of just starting at the burning up paper and sticks, he cleared his throat. "You should sleep now. I'll keep watch, we'll take turns." He told her, but he didn't really want her to take watch, after everything he was still very cautious about her.
"Okay..." she said not sounding so sure about that. Taking off her jacket, she bundled it up and laid her head head on it, she didn't really want to him to take watch either. For all she knew he could take whatever she had and leave her out here with nothing. The two definitely didn't trust each other.
