A world without you

Chapter 47 ~ Astrid's POV

It's hard to sleep when you're cold and warm at the same time and you cough every few minutes. And this was one of my better days. I could sit up and eat a good meal for once. That was my main argument when I persuaded Valka to take a break and go on a flight. Fishlegs had gotten a new clue about the scourge and had flown away yesterday. So it had been only Valka and I but I knew that she needed to fly and think about something else for a while. So after a long argumentation she agreed to go for a flight. But not before she had put everything I could possibly need right beside my bed.
Hiccup had been gone two days and I missed him terribly. Especially now when I was this bored. I tried to read the book of dragons but my head was too clouded. It felt as if my brain was stone and my whole head felt heavy.
But I would have to ignore that when a thump was heard outside my door and another, louder, one was heard shortly afterward. I ran out as fast as I could, which wasn't very fast. In front of me stood Toothless with a worried look on his face and on the ground beside him lay Hiccup. His skin was pale, almost green, and he coughed really bad. He tried to stand up but didn't have the strength. I rushed forward, ignoring my aching head, and helped him sit up and lean against the wall of my hut.
"What have you done?!" I asked him desperately trying to stay calm. He didn't answer. He didn't need too, of course I already knew.
"Hiccup, how long has it been since you got sick?" He didn't say anything. I shook him trying to wake him up.
"Hiccup, you need to tell me! How long has it been?!"
"A day...and a half...." He mumbled.
That was not good. I had to get him to the buffalord dragon quick and it was half a day's journey. I didn't have the time to wait for Valka to come back. We had to go now.
I forced Hiccup to get up on Toothless again and sat down behind him, holding my arms around him so he wouldn't fall of.
"I need your help now, Toothless. Take us to the Buffalord, please" I begged. He looked at me and I knew he had understood.

It was the worst flight of my life. The only thing keeping me from falling of the saddle was Hiccup and the thought of not getting to the cure in time.
As the sun was setting we reached the Buffalord island. It took a while before we saw the dragon but when we did I could feel a big rock lift from my chest. We would make it.
We landed not far away from the dragon and I tried my best to remember what the others had told me they did the last time. I had a strong feeling of deja vu when I helped Hiccup of the saddle and down on the ground. Then I stumbled towards the buffalo with a cup. My head was so dizzy that I could barely see where I was going and when I coughed I could see red liquid  on my hands. That was when Toothless ran forward and let me lean on him for support as we walked together to the dragon. As soon as it had eaten the herbs that was needed I caught up some of the saliva in the cup and walked back to Hiccup.
But I couldn't let his effort be in vain so before I gave him the cure I sat the cup down beside us and took out my knife. He looked at me with worry in his eyes as i lifted it.
"Astrid..." He croaked out and lifted a hand.
"It's okay." I said and took his hand. Then I let go of it, took the knife and cut the hand that had been holding Hiccup's. It was mean to be a small wound but my shaking hands made it a bit deeper than I wanted. I didn't have the energy to even care. I took Hiccup's hand in mine and prayed to the gods that it would work. Then I let go of his hand and gave him the antidote.
As soon as I saw his face regain its color I felt the toll everything had taken on me. I felt weaker than ever before, my head were spinning, my lungs aching and my heart racing. I could hear Hiccup call my name before everything went black.
