"I thought if I played it safe- kept my cards close to my chest, but did the right thing, I could save them both." I expressed, looking down to the ground as I rested my elbows on my knees. "I thought by doing the right thing, not going in there all guns blazing, taking down every person in my way, that I could save her. How wrong was I?" I sniffed away the lurking tears, feeling my eyes burn from what felt like a never ending waterfall of emotions. "If I had done the wrong thing- if I had followed that fire in my gut, she would still be alive. Maggie would have her little sister, an Hershel would have his youngest daughter. I failed them..."
"You wanna know what I think?" Rick asked after a short moment of silence.
"You're gonna tell me anyway." I forced a smile, turning my head back over my shoulder to look up to him as he sat beside me.
"I think that no matter what you did- or did not do, Beth was always gonna make that stand." Rick stated, and he was right. "Wanna know how I know?"
"How?" I said quietly.
"Cause' she was like you, always standin' up for what's right." Rick explained softly, as I focused my eyes back down to the ground. "Stubborn, too. Real stubborn- but for the right reasons. Does it make what happened okay, no- never. But it gives a reason, that's what you taught me. Beth wanted to end that cycle, for the sake of the innocent people that were trapped there, remind you of anyone?"
"Someone that I don't think I am anymore." I twinged, sitting up straight to mimic Rick. "I would have, Rick. If I knew what I know now, I would have taken them all out, for her." I turned to face him, finding his eyes watching me intensely. "For her. For any of us- I would do that. Innocent or not. I would flick the switch."
"We do what's right by us, that's all we can do. There are no good guys anymore, there are no saints, or innocents." Rick expressed, "Only the dead an the undead, but we fight through it, that's how we're here- whatever it takes."
"Whatever it takes." I repeated, leaning into him slightly.
Rick began fiddling with his pocket as he took my left hand in his, before I felt something cold run across my finger; my ring finger.
"The past, present, and future. You, me, and us." Rick lifted his hand away from mine, to reveal a gold band, with three stones attached to it; a diamond, a sapphire and another diamond. More beautiful than I could ever describe.
I automatically went to fiddle with the design, twisting it around my finger with ease. "It's beautiful, Rick." I raised my eyes back to him, "How?"
"Found it in a jewellers back in the town, after we got the supply- after Bob." Rick expressed, as our faces dropped to think about another one of our people who had fallen. Sasha and Bob had just started a relationship, and a beautiful one too; only for it to get snatched away. Rick told me about everything that happened after Daryl and I left, about the Termites and what they did to Bob, how Bob got bitten at the shelter. I never did get to have that talk with him. "I was gonna give it to you that night, before-" He paused, swallowing his thoughts, "I wanted you to have something."
