She rose early every morning, before anyone else set their feet out from underneath the sheets they slept within. Sleeping is for the dead, she believed to be true. Dedicating her few hours of freedom to what mattered most to her. She would creep across the landing floor boards, checking in on her children and loved ones along the way, before prepping any plans for the communities and heading to train her body.
There was a time when every day was different than the one before, and now she has formed a routine of sorts.
A routine that was not to last, or be.
One that broke the boundaries of the world they resided in.
For she did not know that this was the beginning of the end...
Rick's POV
I could smell the summer of the outside, the warmth it radiated, the freshness of the crops, with every deep inhale as my eyes began to adjust to the light. My arm left my torso and fell to the mattress beside me, an unfamiliar feeling from the past month since it had usually landed on the curves of my angel in human form. As I rolled onto my side I sighed at her absence, watching my fingertips glide over the thin sheet that barely covered me. A smile curling into my cheeks as I remembered the night before and what the new day would have to offer.
I got dressed, taking longer to pull on my overly-worn boots before attaching the belt around my waist and heading out of the bedroom. Charlie was still in bed, making peaceful whispers as he slept. He was growing faster than I remembered them to; Carl would always grow faster than I wanted, but at least I saw that. Then the world changed and a small child was forced to become a grown man. Somewhere along the line he had started to guide me instead; the roles reversed, just like they had with Charlie. The sound of Judith coughing snapped me out of my thoughts and lead me to the opposite room, as I trod across the floor boards quietly and placed the back of my hand against her forehead. No temperature, good. Just a cough, also good.
I began making my way downstairs, taking a moment to rest my hand upon the paint print of Carl's hand that he did with Judith on the porch almost two years ago. We didn't want to risk losing it to the weather and since the porch needed redoing after the bombs, we cut this section out and hung it in our home.
"Mornin'," I smiled as I entered the kitchen to Bella with Theo in her arms.
"Mornin' bud." Shane spoke up, thankfully making sure I noticed him before I made a remark to last night. Bella smirked slightly towards me, reading my mind as I read hers, only causing me to laugh inwardly. "D'you hear that shit goin' on last night?" He deliberately set us up to fail. "Like a god damn earthquake—"
"Alright- alright, not in front of Theo." I waved my hand, moving around the kitchen counter and towards my wife before opening my arms to free her from having carried our newborn for probably the last few hours at least.
"Man, he doesn't understand- he's one..."
"You okay?" I asked as Shane continued to ramble, placing a kiss to the side of Bella's cheek.
She gave me a subtle nod as a smirk grew further into her blushing cheeks, "Are you?"
"Yeah- yeah—"
"Am I just talkin' to myself?"
"You're getting cranky in your old age, has anyone told you that?" Bella's sarcasm ever teasing my best friend.
"I tell him every day." Michonne joked as she emerged from the back room.
"Oh- by the way, Judith has a cough—"
