"Daniel

"Daniel... she's not in the Tower." Strand, finally, spoke honestly.

Why... why choose now to be honest? Either be honest to begin with or commit to the damn lie until we're out of this mess. I leant against the railing on the side of Charlie's bed, wondering just how we even stood a chance, as my hand began seemed to automatically reach for my lower belly. Why did I come here? I put myself at risk, my unborn baby, Ezra, Miya, Kai... I should have just stuck it out. As my mind wandered the abyss, concluding any negative or scolding thought it possibly could, a light tough met the back of my hand. As I looked down to the unfamiliar feeling, I found Charlie's hand resting over mine.

"Pl- please... don't f- forget." She murmured with such genuine hope in her eyes.

A shudder escaped me as I pursed my lips together in deep thought before gently placing Charlie's hand back by her side. Don't forget why you are here, don't forget what made you stay, and don't forget what you gained from it all. Redirecting my attention to the scene in the main room of the infirmary, I caught Alicia's weak gaze as though she was asking the same of me that Charlie had. My mind had been made up.

"Luciana lied to you the same reason I did— so you had something to fight for." Strand attempted to excuse, but nothing he said would get through to Daniel. "We- ugh—"

Daniel thumped Strand's forehead with the butt of his handgun, causing him to curl up on the floor.

"Daniel, please..." Alicia barely pleaded, her voice so weak.

I cautiously made my way into the main room, locking eyes with a frightened Strand before laying my eyes against Daniel's. He was a strong man but pained by his past and the methods he had been programmed to use like a robotic system. The elder was traumatised by the loss of his daughter and did what any parent wished they could in the same situation... forget.

"Daniel, I need to ask you something... but I can only ask you once you lower your aim." I spoke softly, and so he did just as I hoped after a few paused moments of consideration. Feeling a little more at ease with his gun not aimed at anyone's head, I took another step closer to him. "What is the last memory you have of Ofelia?"

"I- I— I don't..." He stuttered as the rusted gears began to spin in his mind.

"Think carefully for me Daniel... that very last moment you had, what was it?" I continued, prodding his memory to come back despite how painful I knew it would be for him. You need to remember.

He was so close... until panic set in and he raised his gun up at me. "Don't confuse me!"

"You're confused about what your last memory is of your own daughter?" I kept going, pretending to be unfazed by the weapon that was being held in his hands. "Think, Daniel, think. What was your very last moment?"

"Think b- back to Mexico..." Alicia attempted to help.

"Mexico... I- I never got... to reunite— we never got to reunite..." Daniel choked up his eyes held back the flood that had been brewing up for goodness knows how long. "No- no- you're lying! All of you!" He took me by my shoulders and pushed me into the units on the other side of the room. "We never reunited in Mexico—"
