"Move! Move!"
"Everyone, get down!"
His one eye landed on mine, as shots rang out from all angles, and we found ourselves holding the stare no matter the distance between us. As if that alone was a fight to the death. I felt my muscles tense whilst I kept myself levelled upwards slightly with my bare hands. My eyes became hooded and my fingers began to claw into the dirt, feeling an equal measure of fear and fury cascade through my being.
"Agh!"
"Keep covered!"
I yanked the strap of my gun forward and rested down on my elbows. Letting out a deep breath in an attempt to compose myself, I peered through the scope, finding a clear shot right through the Governor's only eye. My finger grazed lightly against the trigger, as he seemed to stare back at me through the lens. Why would he put himself at risk like that? How could he possibly know those movements would cause such confliction in my own actions? He shook his head by mere millimetres, causing me to look up from behind the red glass, and just as he knew, my split second of hesitation to fire gave him ample time to take cover behind the comfort of his vehicle door.
Dammit!
Looking up to my left, I scanned each member of our group individually, finding they had all chosen to engage in the shoot off. I quickly turned my head over my right shoulder, landing my eyes firmly on Rick who was laid on his back with his rifle tucked firmly in his arms.
"Rick!" I whisper shouted, terrified that he had been wounded.
He harshly pushed himself onto his stomach, taking quick cover from another ray of bullets as he looked up to me. I followed the direction of the danger towards him, coming into view of Martinez who was taking his own cover from within the forest. I rose onto my knees, extending one of my legs to allow my elbows to rest on my thigh and aimed my rifle towards the loyal pet, taking several shots at him.
"Can you see Carl?" Rick shouted in question, unable to catch sight of his son from where he was positioned.
"I saw him with Beth!" I called back, rolling myself over to the fence.
It took me a few seconds to realise that the shooting had stopped from the Governor's side, as we all panted for air, feeling succumbed to the terror that had arrived on our doorstep. I carefully lifted my upper body slightly, peering over the tall grass once again, to see the one eyed leader and his men were still positioned by the lining of the forest.
The new silence began to fill with distant moaning, as well as something else.
An engine.
A vehicle of some sort.
Out of what felt like nowhere, a white and orange van sped down the gravel track and burst through the front gates, tearing them from their hinges. I instantly tensed my abdomen, as I spider crawled backwards with the fear of the unknown setting in once again. The driver behind the wheel of the vehicle did a sharp turn before coming to a sudden stop.
