After the revelation of newly recruited, Merle Dixon, the Saviors put on a welcoming event with whiskey, rock music and consenting eye candy. As he gave out the impression that he was enjoying every second of the attention, Bella had other things to concern herself with, like her son-in-law leaving his home to find the Sanctuary, and then shooting down two of her brothers men.
Negan spent hours with Carl, alone, tormenting him with his brutal sarcasm, but also using the time to get to know his nephew. He wanted to know his family; a family he didn't think he had anymore, or could ever have again. This faltered Carl. Even though he came to the Sanctuary with the intention to kill Negan and save his mom-figure, it made him wonder if death could be avoided for a better future, but not everyone shared that feeling. Once the celebrations were over, Negan made the call to go back to Alexandria to deliver Carl home safely; with the repercussions being that the town would need to give over another half of their belongings as punishment.
"I have a surprise for you." Negan grinned widely, entering the open plan living space, where Bella was setting up the table as instructed. "Quick- quick... go..." The Saviors leader chuckled with something closely resembling joy, as he ushered in Charlie, followed by Carl who was carrying Judith. Bella looked over her children, placing the cutlery down on the table as she fought against her natural instincts. Negan noticed her frozen stature and his glowing excitement faded, soon realising why. She was afraid, he thought silently. Sighing, he moved around the kids and tilted his head down to his sister. "Ana, this isn't a test. I brought the kids here because they are your kids, an it was wrong of me to ever take them away from you."
"No tricks?" Bella asked quietly.
"None." Negan raised his brow, desperate for her to not only see him as her leader, but also as her brother.
As he stepped aside, Bella witnessed the sheer fear in her children's eyes and hesitated no longer to engulf them in her arms as tightly as she could without hurting them, never wanting to let them go again. The comfort it brought her was like no other, and she only wished she didn't have to suppress the rising emotion within her. As if to signal that she had been holding on for too long, Olivia entered through the front door with the packet of lemonade mix that would quench Negan's thirst.
"What'd you do, get lost in the cookie jar or somethin'?" Negan joked in his own amusement.
"Negan..." Bella murmured in a harsher tone, glaring up at her brother.
"Yes, Ana?" Negan arched his back, tilting his head and narrowed his eyes, daring her to make a move that would question his authority.
"I'm sorry... your— Arat, I think her name is— she was talking to someone and I couldn't get past." Olivia broke the tension with her explanation.
"Have you ever wondered if you cut the candy an cake, you might actually be able to fit up a stairwell with another livin', breathin' human being?" Negan taunted.
