Today was our third day here at Alexandria. Some of us were settling in to what had the potential to be our new home, and others were holding back. I, for one, was in between the two. A part of me felt belonged here, like I was meant for this place, but another part of me ran like a risk assessment, mapping out every flaw and danger with the urge to get my family away from it all.
I believe that Deanna is a good person, with an ambitious and clever head upon her shoulders, but she lacked insight to how the world was now. All of these people did. They had become comfortable in their bubble wrapped world, behind thick, solid steel walls, to barely realise the difference the apocalypse had created.
"I wanted to ask you," I began, as Shane and I walked down the road on our way to meet Deanna. "before we got here- with Aaron, you called him a pilgrim?" I reiterated with difficulty, finding the choice of word so peculiar for him. "What the hell happened?"
"Listen, I'm jus' tryin' to lessen the swearing around the kids." Shane gave me a look as if I should understand exactly what he was saying.
"I recall you swearing a few words before that one." I stated with raised eyebrows.
"I did say tryin'." He smirked slightly, knowing only too well that this was a challenge he would never fully win. "Where'd you send Kai?"
"Rick took him out- wanted to give him a run." I explained. "It's a big change for him, being tucked up behind walls and fences again, with new people and unfamiliar smells."
"Yeah- think Merle could use one of these here runs." Shane joked, causing me to nudge my elbow into his side lightly.
"Stop." I chuckled.
Our attention drifted to a small group of people towards the entrance of Alexandria; consisting of Glenn, Noah, Tara, Nicholas who had granted us access to the community on our first day and the man I came to know as Aiden, one of Deanna's sons.
"You tied up walkers—"
"It killed our friend!" Aiden shouted angrily towards Glenn, as he attempted to assert his dominance.
"Come on." Shane beckoned to me as we began to hurry ourselves over to the commotion.
"Hey, man. Just take a step back." Noah attempted to intervene.
"Come on, tough guy." Aiden taunted, shoving the palm of his hand into Glenn's chest.
"Hey!" Shane yelled, taking several strides towards Deanna's son and aggressively pushed him away from Glenn. "You keep your god damn hands to yourself, man."
"What is going on?" Deanna shouted, running over from the other side of the street.
"The Chinese one has a problem with the way we do things." Aiden retorted to my disgust, before taking his focus from Shane and turned to his mom. "Why'd you let these people in?"
