We found the entrance to the bunker and quickly entered. It was eery and humid, damp yet stuffy with its warm air, unstable for anyone seeking refuge. It was clear to me, as soon as we entered, that something terrible had happened down here. We made our way for the drain pipes, since Alicia told us that they were the only other way out.
"We can't warn 'em over the radio, the rangers will hear everythin'." Morgan reminded, as if I had forgotten.
I pulled out the radio from my duffel bag and smiled up to him. "You really think I ran without being prepared?"
He smirked slightly as a chuckle escaped his lips. "Old habits die hard, huh?"
"Somethin' like that." I agreed with a sense of fondness. "We let them know we're goin' into the bunker through the main radio. Then we'll use mine- Ezra has the other, both are connected on a private frequency so nobody else will pick it up. We relay the plan to them and get them to guide the herd into the bunker, by which time—"
"—The Rangers will have followed us in." Morgan nodded along with every part of the plan. He was beaming because he knew, like I did, that the plan would work, and it would in turn free up the Tower to make it easier for us to invade.
We found the level with the drain pipes, but I could tell Morgan was struggling to focus. His mind was latched onto Mo.
"Do you think she's alright?" He murmured.
"I'm sure she's in safe hands with Sherry." I said, hoping my words could be of some comfort. "Whatever happens, Miya won't let anything happen to any of them."
"She was in the military, right?" Morgan asked.
"Yeah- yeah, she was. Bomb disposal unit, so nuclear radiation is kind of her thing- but she also did major combat, martial arts, you name it and she probably has it crossed off her to-do list." I admired within her presence, something I would never have openly done if she were here with us. "She's more than capable- so she'll keep them safe no matter what."
"If I didn't know any better, I'd say you just paid Miya a compliment." Morgan smirked slightly before heading into the tunnel.
"If you don't promise not to snitch, I may have to leave you down here." I called out to him as I crouched down to watch him take the first few shuffles into the dim drain pipe on his knees.
"Gotta catch me first." He laughed to himself. The sound of him laughing made me realise that in all the time I had known him, I had rarely heard that from him. He never had much to smile for, but now he seems to. Grace and Mo had given him the hope for life that he had lost for so long. "Belle', come on. Get movin'."
I ignited the flame on the lighter and held it up toward the fire detectors. Soon enough a blaring alarm began to ring out as water flared from the ceiling sprinklers, and I didn't hesitate to follow after Morgan through the drain.
