The neighbouring city wasn't a safe place to be, which is why Strand and his people seemed to often avoid it. But unfortunately for Charlie, the city is exactly where the elevator parts are. The building in which they are located within is also a death trap, full of radiated walkers. She didn't have an easy task ahead but she was clearly determined. But why she was so determined is another matter all together, because if there is anything I can call out a mile off, it's a lie.

"You're really doing all of this just so you can live in the Tower?" I heard Ali question Charlie as I watched them both from the opposing buildings rooftop.

"That... and I want to help you become a Ranger." The young girl responded.

I shook my head, taking my eyes off them for a mere few seconds, realising the growing feelings between the two of them. This is not your problem to fix... I kept reminding myself.

"Update." My radio's static sounded quietly, since I had put it on the lowest setting possible.

I pushed myself back from the edge and knelt down as I prepared the sniper rifle I had been given from the Tower's armoury. "They made it to the build. The girl's just about to go in."

"What took them so long?" Howard questioned.

"They made a pit-stop on the way. Stalkers were close by- I'm keeping an eye on them, they'll be fine." I responded, setting the radio down beside me as I connected the pieces of the rifle together, adjusting the scope.

"Just make sure Ali gets back safely." Howard said coldly, causing my brow to furrow slightly at his choice of words.

An unsettling feeling began to grow in my core as I cautiously picked up the radio, as though I were worried it could scold me. "Howard, what exactly do you want me to do about the girl?"

"Nothing, not yet anyway." He said with deliberation.

"Then let me ask you this... why'd you send her on this run an not me almost two weeks ago when I was coped up with nothing to do? What game is this?" I asked.

"Unlike Charlie, you actually have value." Howard said crudely.

"Value?" I repeated.

"I lied when I said you're replaceable, Bella. Someone of your skill and expertise cannot afford to be risked." He said, for the first time, honestly.

What an ass face, I sighed with exaggeration. "She's a kid, Howard—"

"Hey, I wouldn't expect you to understand. You abandoned your kids..." He rambled off, setting a dagger through an open wound as I bit down on my lower lip, barely suppressing my rage. "She can't be trusted. If she makes it back, fine. I'm just saying... it wouldn't matter if something happened while you're all out there."

"You told this same shit to Ali?" I snapped back.

"Not in so many words, but I'm confident he'll make the right decision when the time comes." Howard remarked confidently.
