summary: when his daughter skips school out of the blue, mark wonders she's dating
_
despite y/n being 16 years old, her father mark wanted her to stay little forever. and he was pretty confident that his daughter was raised well, that she wouldn't do stupid stuff like most teenagers her age. however a bird has got to leave the nest at some point.
"so you gonna come to the hospital after school?" mark turned his head to look at his daughter in the passenger seat. unlike most mornings, the two were actually on time today when dropping y/n off at school. "sure." y/n smiled at her dad. but her smile slowly faded when she remembered her after school plans.
much to mark's dismay, y/n was in fact dating. actually she had a date today--but she would never admit that to her dad. she had two options: option 1, confess about her teenage romance to her dad, or option 2, cancel your date and reschedule. and right now to y/n, option 2 was really her only option. the two arrived at y/n's school as the teenager grabbed her backpack. "thanks for the ride dad." y/n slightly opened the car door. "i'll see you after school."
"ok, make sure to page me when you get to the hospital."
"great, bye."
"bye."
y/n started to walk into her school, while she looked as her dad drove off. when she was sure he was gone, she walked over to the bench in front of her school and sat down. y/n pulled out her phone to text charlie--her new teenage romance. "hey, i have to cancel tonight--," y/n started to type before she felt two hands over her eyes.
"shouldn't you be in class?" y/n heard the mystery person speak. that's when she knew it was charlie. "i don't know, shouldn't you?" y/n retorted which caused the pair to giggle. "i probably should be, but i wanted to see my favorite girl on this beautiful spring morning. you know spring represents beautiful things." charlie put their arm around y/n, the couple smiled at each other.
"where did you get that from? 101 cheesy things to say to your girlfriend?" y/n played hard to get.
"no. i got it from 101 things to say to make your girlfriend smile." charlie smirked at y/n. the smirk the y/n couldn't resist. the smirk that was the reason why straight A, squeaky-clean attendance record y/n, was sitting on a bench with charlie instead of being in class.
"hey listen, i actually can't get ice-cream with you tonight." y/n broke the news to charlie, as she watched the disappointment spill on their face. "what!? come on they have an unlimited topping bar. i promise it'll be fun--," charlie started to ramble before y/n cut them off. "no char, of course it will be fun." y/n calmed them down. "it's just that i promised my dad that i would visit him at work after school. i'm really sorry." y/n told charlie. charlie wasn't the only one who was upset about their date being canceled, y/n was too. the two sat there for a while as time went by. they talked, laughed, and shared stories. after 45 minutes the couple finally realized that they had skipped first period.
while y/n was in school, mark was working away at seattle grace. he had just got out of an hour surgery and he was already tired. "hey sloan." owen walked up to his new colleague. after about 1 month at the hospital, owen was starting to make friends, and mark and derek were warming up to him as well. "hunt. how's the hospital treatin' ya?" mark looked up at owen while he put his pen in his lab-coat front pocket.
"i've been here for a month, sloan." owen reminded him that he didn't just arrive and he was familiar with the hospital. mark let out a small laugh as their other coworker, and friend derek approached them.
"hello gentlemen." derek tucked his clipboard under his arm. "shepherd, the one and only." mark smiled at his lifelong friend. not long after the three men sparked a conversation, mark's phone rang under the contact "seattle ridgeway high school"
mark looked up at his friends in confusion: his daughter never got in trouble, so why would the school be calling?
"hello?" mark spoke as he answered the phone. "hello, are we speaking to dr. mark sloan?" the secretary on the phone questioned. as soon as she said the word "doctor" a boastful smile grew on mark's face. "yeah this is he." mark smiled towards derek and owen. "hi, we're calling to let you know that your daughter y/n wasn't in her first period class today." the secretary spoke. mark's previous smile immediately faded. "what do you mean, she wasn't in first period? did she skip?" mark asked the woman, not really hiding his confusion
"i don't know sir. you'll have to take that up with your daughter."
mark sighed over the phone. "alright. thank you for letting me know." mark said before he hung up the phone. this time his anger was a bit more apparent than before. "get this, my teenage daughter skipped class." mark delivered the news to his friends. "i mean she's never done something like this before. should i be worried?" mark was genuinely confused.
"oh come on, she's a sloan. it's in her genes to cause trouble." derek laughed, but his smile quickly faded when mark gave him a death stare. "seriously guys. this is so out of character for her." mark let out another sigh.
"well maybe, she skipped to hang out with a friend." owen shrugged as he gave his input. "or maybe more than a friend." derek wiggles his eyebrows trying to get under mark's skin, but was quickly shut down when mark slapped his arm. "well he could be right sloan. maybe she's dating?" owen agreed with shepherd.
"what? no. y/n doesn't date." mark reassured himself. "well maybe she does now?" derek shrugged at his obviously worried friend. "no! i'm telling you guys she's not dating. and plus she's too young anyways." mark crossed his arms. he watched as derek and owen shared a look with each other. "what? why are you guys sharing looks?" mark pointed between the two of them, before crossing his arms again.
"well she is 16." owen shrugged while derek nodded. "and she's never skipped class before. look we aren't saying for sure." derek tried to calm down mark, but it was far too late for that. at this point he wasn't worried about her skipping class. was his daughter dating?
to be continued...
