summary: meredith finds out that her teenage daughter has a boyfriend

"well this is a first." maggie spoke as her, amelia, and y/n set the table for dinner. "we're all home for dinner, nobody's working late. we should try to make this happen more often. what do you think guys?" y/n put the last fork on the table.
"works for me, don't know if it will work with the hospitals schedule though." amelia shrugged and walked off to the kitchen where meredith was preparing dinner. y/n pulled out her phone and went to her contacts. she clicked 'noah' and saw that there were 2 new messages from him. "wanna go to the park!!" and "we can bring our bikes and get some exercise too :)" were the two texts noah sent y/n.
y/n smiled at her phone as she read noah's text. noah and y/n were considered a thing but weren't necessarily boyfriend and girlfriend. they weren't seeing other people, but they weren't seeing each other. "ooh, who are you talking to?" y/n noticed her aunt amelia took a seat beside her. y/n cleared her throat and put her phone back in her front pocket. "um nobody, just a friend from school." y/n tried to drop the conversation.
"somebody has a boyfriend!" amelia teased in a sing-songy tune. y/n blushed as her mom brought over the lasagna she had just made over to the table. "zola! bailey! dinner!" meredith called her two younger children as she sat across from y/n at the table. "remember y/n tomorrow you have to babysit." meredith said as she scooped some salad on her plate.
y/n nodded a grabbed a roll of bread. "oh yeah and don't forget, next weekend i'm going to the mall with my friend." y/n told her mom. "yeah your friend." amelia chuckled as she put air quotes around the word friend. "what are you talking about." meredith took a bite of her salad as zola and bailey joined them at the table. y/n looked down at her plate knowing her mom was looking at her and didn't want to look back.
"oh um nothing." amelia picked up the signal that y/n didn't want to talk about it and dropped the subject. "so zola how was school today?" amelia redirected the conversation to zola. "yeah, y/n dropped off your lunch for you today right?" maggie added. zola forgot her lunch at home so, on y/n's lunch she had to drop it off for her at school. y/n of course, brought noah, as she didn't think it would be a big deal. y/n took a sip of her water. "yeah, her and some boy dropped it off for me." zola said causing y/n to choke on her water.
"oh my god!" amelia exclaimed and tapped on y/n's back to try and stop her from choking. y/n eventually calmed down and stopped choking. meredith looked at y/n worrying. was her daughter dating and didn't tell her? more importantly did she tell her aunt amelia before she told her?
after dinner y/n was washing the dishes when meredith came to join her. meredith grabbed a plate and started washing on the other side of the sink. "thought i would help you, and speed this up." she smiled at y/n. y/n lightly sighed in relief and thanked her mom as there were a lot of dishes.
the two washed the plates in silence, until meredith decided to address the elephant in the room. "so what were amelia and zola talking about at dinner?" meredith spoke up. y/n cleared her throat before replying. "um w-what do you mean?" y/n said nervously. she didn't know what her and noah were, so she didn't want to tell her mom yet. "do you have a boyfriend?" meredith was tired of going around the subject, so she decided to straight up ask her.
y/n sighed. "ok look, there's this boy noah and we've been talking. i wouldn't say we're boyfriend and girlfriend, but we're together. i'm sorry i didn't tell you, i just didn't know how you would react." she told meredith. meredith stood in silence for a little, processing what her daughter just told her.
"have you done anything?" meredith wanted to pop the awkward question first. "oh god mom, no of course not." y/n quickly said. "ok." meredith laughed. "is he cute?" y/n playfully rolled her eyes at her mom's questions. "yes mom he's cute." y/n chuckled as she put her last dish in the dishwasher.
"as long as you're being safe. and even if you don't want to talk to me, you can also talk to amelia, or maggie, even zola if she'll listen." meredith chuckled. "thanks mom." y/n smiled as she took off her gloves and started to walk off with meredith. "and i'm gonna be meeting this boy soon, yes?" meredith raised and eyebrow at y/n. "yeah of course. i just wanted to tell you first." y/n smiled as the two walked away giggling at the teenagers first love.
