"y/n! you have five more minutes, or else i'm leaving without you!" derek yelled at his teenage daughter to wake up. it was currently 7AM, and derek took the day off to spend with his daughter, but to his dismay y/n was being a sleepy head. derek sighed as he eyed his wife meredith while she drank her coffee. meredith and derek were happily married, and y/n was glad to have meredith as a step-mom.

"maybe you should go upstairs and wake her up?" meredith shrugged and she took another sip of her coffee, trying to wake herself up. "yeah you're right. i'll be right back. hopefully she doesn't kill me for disturbing her slumber." derek planted a kiss on meredith's forehead, before walking up the stairs to y/n's room.

"y/n?" derek knocked on the door before entering. he wasn't surprised to see y/n lying on her bed scrolling through her phone. "i was calling you, why didn't you answer me?" derek questioned as he walked towards his daughter's bed. y/n put her phone down and sat herself up on her bed, while stretching her arms out a bit. "i just woke up." y/n shrugged before getting herself out of bed.

"so, you said we're doing something fun today right?" y/n lightly smiled at her dad. she was excited to finally spend some time alone with her father. of course she loved meredith, but she felt as if now she never got to see derek. "yeah we are. but it's a surprise, so hurry up and get dressed so we can go." derek exited y/n's room before returning downstairs.

"she's up, and getting ready. do you think she'll be excited? i remember going fishing with her when she was little, but i don't know if she'll be-," derek started before meredith cut him off. "derek, as long as you're making an effort and spending time with her she'll appreciate it." derek smiled at meredith's advice before finishing up his breakfast. soon y/n came down, ate her breakfast, and her and derek were off.

"so any guesses?" derek asked his daughter as she looked out the car window. the car drove down the road as y/n looked out the window, trying to spot any clues. "um, not at the moment?" y/n looked back at her dad. "got any clues for me?" y/n asked her dad as she curiously tilted her head. "silence." he stared at the road. y/n lightly chuckled, confused at what her dad was hinting at. the two continued driving until they reached their destination.

as they got out of the car derek grabbed a kit from the trunk, which confused y/n a bit. the two walked out and y/n had no idea what was going on-until she saw the boat on a lake. "fishing? dad really?" y/n looked at her dad. "what? you used to love fishing!" derek told his daughter as they continued to walk up to the bait shop. "yeah, when i was like four!" y/n crossed her arms. y/n's idea of fun was definitely not fishing. "oh come on! just give it a chance, you'll love it." derek told y/n before they bought their bait and headed out to the boat.

about an hour had passed since y/n and her dad were on the boat. only a few fish were caught-all by derek. y/n was already bored just sitting on the boat. "dad, i've been holding my rod out for hours. when am i gonna catch a fish?" y/n stared at the lake. "do you know the biggest fish i have ever caught?" derek raised an eyebrow at y/n. y/n shook her head at her dad, before returning her attention back to the lake.

"well the biggest fish i have ever caught was 11 pounds." derek threw his pole into the water. "wow that's pretty big-," y/n started to say. "and do you know how i caught an 11 pound fish?" derek questioned. y/n shook her head, not understanding the point her dad was trying to make. "well i did it with two simple steps." derek started to reel in his rod. "patience. and silence." derek reeled in his trout before putting it into his bin. "well-," y/n wanted to get one last word in. "shhh. silence." derek lightly smiled at his daughter.

y/n on the other hand was not amused. she just wanted to either catch a fish, or go home-and it looked like neither of those were happening for her. until y/n started to feel a tug at her rod. "um dad, something's happening!" y/n panicked as she struggled to get a grip on her rod. "y/n, i think you caught a fish! ok, ok. just calm down, keep your hands steady and reel it in." derek calmly instructed his daughter on what to do. y/n listened to derek's advice, kept a steady rhythm, and caught her first fish.

"i did it! i caught a fish!" y/n gleamed. "good job honey! now we just to convince meredith to come with us." derek smiled at y/n before helping her properly remove the fish from the rod. derek and y/n laughed before finishing off their fishing trip. y/n and derek chose to weigh their fish before deciding to capture this moment on photo. "hey, excuse me! can you take a picture of us please?" y/n's dad asked a nice man who was also going fishing with his daughter. the man agreed and snapped a photo of y/n and derek together.

"thank you so much!" derek took the camera from the man. "of course!" the man said before turning to y/n. "and hey, enjoy this time with your dad. you're not gonna have that forever." the man and his daughter walked off leaving y/n and derek there alone. "so should we head home?" derek glanced down and the photo that was just taken. "yeah, but um dad?" y/n grabbed derek's arm. "in case i don't say it enough, i love you. and i had a lot of fun today, even if i didn't show it at first." y/n lightly chuckled at her dad as a smile grew on derek's face. "i love you too y/n." derek pulled his daughter into a hug.

y/n knew that man was right. her dad wasn't gonna be with her forever, so she had to make the best of whatever they did together. "now, let's go home and brag to meredith about this super cool picture we took." y/n smiled as she grabbed the photo from her dad. "ok, let's go home." derek laughed as the two walked towards their car and drove home as the sunset.
