summary: y/n is meredith and derek's 15 year old daughter. she was asked by meredith and derek to watch her younger siblings zola, bailey, and ellis, on a night she planned to have a friend over.
*takes place around season 12 and let's pretend derek didn't die bc no and maggie and amelia don't live there*

"finish your breakfast zola, we're leaving soon." meredith told her adopted-daughter zola as she packed her lunch. derek sat at the counter drinking his coffee and reading a medical magazine. their 15 year old daughter y/n, walked down the stairs with her phone in her hand.

"someone's finally decided to grace us with her presence." derek said as he saw y/n come down the stairs. "good morning." y/n finally looked up from her phone and lightly smiled at them. "good morning." meredith and derek said at the same time, as if rehearsed.

derek looked up at meredith and signalled her to drop the bomb. meredith cleared her throat and looked up at y/n. "y/n." she grabbed her attention. "yeah?" y/n put her phone down. whenever her parents had something to say she would be respectful and put her phone down, even if she didn't want to listen.

"tonight dad and i are gonna be working late, so we're gonna need you to watch your siblings." meredith leaned over the counter. "how late?"
y/n tilted her head. tonight she invited a "friend" over and she didn't want babysitting to interfere with her plans.

"we'll be home at nine, so you're gonna be responsible for putting them to bed." derek took a sip of his coffee. y/n groaned. tonight was the only night she could have her friend over and now she couldn't. "can't you guys hire a babysitter? tonight i'm supposed to have a friend over." y/n begged. she really didn't want to see her plans to go down the drain.

"well i'm sorry y/n, it's too short notice to hire a babysitter we trust." meredith handed zola her packed lunch as she put on her backpack. "plus you never mentioned any plans to us." meredith added. it was true, but in all fairness y/n didn't want her parents to know about her plans, which is why she never mentioned them.

"i'm sorry honey, but you're in charge." derek rubbed y/n's shoulder as he got up from his seat and grabbed his briefcase and coat. he picked up bailey while meredith picked up ellis. in the mornings they dropped zola off at school, and dropped bailey and ellis at the hospital daycare, while y/n walked to school since it was only ten minutes away and it gave her more time to get ready.

"we'll call to check up on you after school." meredith kissed y/n's forehead and derek did the same. "ok." y/n sighed. "have a good day at school." meredith said and went out the door with derek following her. y/n let out a loud sigh as the front door closed behind them. looks like her plans were ruined.

it was 6:50 pm, and derek and meredith called y/n for the third time checking to see how everything was going. y/n rolled her eyes as she spoke on the phone with her overprotective parents. "are you sure everything is going ok?" meredith asked concerned. "meredith lets just leave her alone, she's doing fine." y/n heard derek say over the phone. meredith was a mama bear so she was very protective over her kids.
