"ok, so i'm gonna be in surgery for the next few hours, can i trust you to stay here alone and not cause any trouble?" derek quickly replied to a text on his phone, then looked up at his daughter y/n while the two walked down the hospital halls together.
"dad i come here all the time. of course you can trust me." y/n gave him a reassuring smile. derek sighed quietly and gave her a kiss on her cheek. he looked at her as if he had just smelled something. "is that a new perfume?" he furrowed his eyebrows at her. "yeah i bought it when i went to the mall with jessica." y/n nodded. she purposely skipped over the part that the new fragrance she bought was $30, and she used his credit card to pay for it.
"hmm. it's nice." derek lightly smiled at the scent. "i'll see you after surgery. be good." he walked towards the elevator, then turned back around to point his finger at her as he spoke. y/n playfully rolled her eyes as her father disappeared into elevator. now that y/n knew that he was gone she walked over to the same elevator her dad just took, and hit floor two. the peds floor.
she landed on the pediatric floor and headed over to room 207. she looked at the door and saw it read "peyton hurley, age 16." she walked in the room expecting to see only her newly made friend peyton, who instead was joined by alex karev and arizona robbins, two doctors who specialized in peds.
"oh um, hi guys." y/n awkwardly laughed as she tucked a hair behind her ear. alex and arizona both looked at her, confused on why she walked into a random patients room. "are you looking for your dad?" alex looked at her. "um no." y/n cleared her throat. y/n couldn't help but notice peyton holding his laughter from his hospital bed, which made her want to laugh as well.
"then what are you doing here?" alex's patience was growing thin, due to his long shift at the hospital. the last thing he wanted was to have to explain to his attending dr. shepherd, why his daughter was lingering the halls. "well peyton goes to my school, and i wanted to give him a get-well present." y/n confirmed her story and smiled at the two peds surgeons.
"oh that's sweet, where's the present?" arizona smiled as she noticed y/n's empty hands after she claimed to have brought a present for peyton. "oh well the funny thing is i forgot it. but it's the thought that counts right?" y/n shrugged hopeful that they would drop the conversation.
y/n would talk to alex a lot on his breaks, and a lot of the conversations consisted of talking about y/n's obvious budding crush on peyton. alex rolled his eyes knowing that she was lying. "whatever kid. just don't mess up the place, alright." he walked out. "tell me what happens. i love first kiss stories." arizona winked at y/n, who blushed in embarrassment as robbins left the room.
peyton bursted into laugher as y/n stood there with a red face. "shut up pey!" y/n laughed as she grabbed his hoodie that was sitting on his hospital bed, and threw it at him. he caught it causing y/n to roll her eyes.
"so how've you been?" y/n's laughter dies down. "as well as a 16 year old boy with a stage three meningioma could be." peyton smiled sarcastically at her. peyton has unfortunately been diagnosed with brain cancer, and he had it for a while. y/n gave him a serious look. "don't joke about that pey. it's not funny, seriously." she told him as she stood up. "alright, alright. relax, i'm sorry." peyton put his hands up on surrender.
"no really peyton, i don't know how you can joke about that when-," y/n started, but was cut off by peyton staring at the door. "call me crazy, but i think that's your dad who just got off the elevator and he's heading this way." peyton warned her. "shoot!" y/n quickly crawled under peyton's bed as her dad walked into the room.
"hey peyton. how's everything?" derek greeted his patient. "i'm good dr. shepherd. how are you?" peyton smiled at his surgeon. "i'm good thank you. i have some good news for you. my schedule cleared up and i am able to take you into surgery tomorrow. and i think i will be able to get all of the tumor." derek smiled at the boy as he delivered the news.
peyton stood there in shock to what he just heard. "wow. so wait, if you get all of the tumor i'll walk out of here cancer free?" peyton wanted to make sure. "well of course there is a chance of reoccurrence, plus the chance of post-op infections are pretty high, but to answer your question- yes you'll be cancer free." derek smiled at the teenager as he beamed of joy. y/n smiled from under the hospital bed, grateful to hear that her friend would finally be healed.
a few weeks passed after peyton's surgery. derek got all of the tumor, there were very little post-op infections and no signs of reoccurrence yet. peyton was discharged from seattle grace and was thankfully healed. he came to visit a week after he was discharged. him and y/n were in the hospital waiting room hanging out as he prepared to go greet his doctors.
"y/n what perfume is that?" peyton looked at her as they both sat in the hospital waiting room. "i think it's called moonlight. why?" y/n lightly smiled at him. "it smells really good." he chuckled which caused y/n to let out a giggle as well.
"look y/n i just want to say thank you. for being there when i was sick. you were a great friend to me and i can never repay you. you're an amazing person." peyton told y/n. y/n smiled and wiped a tear that grew in her eye. "of course peyton. that's what friends are for." y/n smiled as the two stood up and went in for a hug. the hug lasted longer then expected when peyton finally pulled away. "now i smell like perfume." he chuckled as he smelled his sweater. "at least you smell good." y/n jokes as peyton playfully shoved her.
derek, karev, mark, bailey sat in the attendings lounge and chatted for a bit before they had to go into the OR for surgery. the were interrupted by a knock at the door and were greeted by their old patient peyton. "hi guys. i wanted to see doctor shepherd. doctor robbins told me that you were in here and i could quickly come in." peyton told them.
"of course. nice to see you peyton." derek greeted him. the five of them had a brief chat before peyton had to leave. "i just want to thank you again doctor shepherd. for saving my life and all." peyton smiled. "oh please it was my pleasure. and call me derek." derek smiled and went in for a hug. as the two were hugging derek noticed a very familiar scent but, he decided not to say anything. peyton left leaving the four doctors in the lounge.
"did anyone notice his scent?" derek looked at mark, bailey, and alex. they all shrugged and looked at him confused. "i could've sworn he smells like-," derek thought and tried to piece his thoughts together. "my daughter." he figured out. "he smells like y/n. why does he smell like y/n." he looked at the other doctors. karev tried to hide his face since he knew why peyton smelled like y/n, but didn't want to rat her out for hanging out with the boy behind derek's back.
"maybe he has a sister." bailey tried to calm derek down. "or maybe he just got some." mark mumbled to himself not so quietly, which caused derek to shoot him a glare. the two argued back and forth while bailey tried to stop them. karev quickly and quietly snuck out of there to avoid all confrontation with derek.
as alex walked down the hall he saw y/n at the vending machine. "hey, why does that peyton kid smell like you?" alex put two dollars in the machine and pressed a button. y/n's eyes widened. "um we hugged. why?" she got concerned to why he was asking. "your dad's getting suspicious. you should probably open up about you and cancer boy, before he finds out another way." alex grabbed his chips from the vending machine, then walked away. y/n smiled to herself. she didn't care if her dad found out. she got to hug peyton and she made a lifelong friend, and to her that's all that mattered.
