Song of the Chapter: Let You Down by NF
I had slept for about an hour, before I woke up from a commotion in the cells below mine. I quickly jumped up and ran down, only to see Lori trying to save Hershel. Carl, Beth, Maggie, Carol, and Glenn were watching from the sidelines, as Lori made her best efforts.
Hershel gasped air, grabbing Lori, causing everyone to rush forward. Once Carol and I had Lori at a safe distance, we looked back over at Hershel and seen that he was breathing again. I gently patted Lori's arm and gave her an encouraging smile, as she finally controlled her breathing.
"What's going on?" Rick asked, causing everyone to look over at him.
"Hershel stopped breathing, but Lo-" Carl began, causing me to cut him off.
"Lori saved him." I added, giving Carl a look.
"Yeah." Glenn agreed, and we watched Rick walk in and place handcuffs on one of Hershel's wrists, as well as to the rail of the bunk bed.
"Just to be safe." He commented, walking back out of the room.
As soon as he had walked out, I followed him and Carl grabbed my arm. He pulled me to the stairs, and motioned for us to go back to his cell. Once we were inside, I crossed my arms and stared at the boy.
"What was that look for?" He asked, his eyes holding many emotions.
"Carl, I don't know how your Dad would feel about you calling your mother--" I began, before he cut me off.
"She's not my mother, not anymore." He murmured, and I nodded.
"I don't know how he'll feel hearing you call Lori by her name. I don't want him to get mad at you. If anything, I'd be alright with him accusing me of changing your mind about her. H-he might need to hear it from her, Carl. I don't want you getting in trouble." I said, causing him to sigh.
"Dad doesn't need to blame you. You're not the reason she's a bad mom. You're not the reason she ruined her chances." Carl replied, causing me to nod.
"I know, but I'd rather him blame me than be mad at you. I'd rather not have him yelling at you." I commented, and he nodded.
Turning away slightly, getting ready to leave the room, I was shocked when Carl wrapped his arms around me and buried his face in my chest. Sighing lightly, I hugged him, taking the hat off his and, and kissing the top of his head.
"I don't want you and Dad to fight because of me. I need you to be there for me, like a mom really should, like you always have been." He said, as I ran my fingers through his hair.
"No matter what, I'll always be here for you, sweetheart. Nothing is going to take me away from you or from Harry. We'll always be a family." I stated, holding his face in my hands, wiping away the few tears that escaped his eyes.
"I love you, Rach." He murmured, and I smiled.
"I love you, too, baby. You and Harry both are my entire life." I replied, hugging him once more.
As I let go of him, I seen Harry pick his head up and look over at Carl and I.
"Hi, Mommy." He murmured, and I smiled.
"Hi, baby." I replied, helping him out of bed.
"Dad." Carl announced, causing me to turn around and look at Rick.
"Can I have a word with Rachel?" Rick asked, and Carl nodded.
He walked over and grabbed Harry's hand, leading him out of the cell. Once they were down the stairs, Rick sighed and sat down on the bunk, motioning for me to sit next to him.
"Rick--" I began, before he cut me off.
"Lori talked to me, told me about what happened while I was gone." Rick said, causing me to frown.
"Did she tell you about her and my talk?" I asked, and he nodded.
"Yes, she did. She told me everything; told me how Carl yelled at her, saying she wasn't his mother; told me that he went straight to you, didn't even acknowledge her, but she said she wasn't mad. She said you and her talked, and that she officially gave up all her rights to you; said you're a better mother than she'll ever be." Rick stated, causing me to bite my lip.
"How does that make you feel?" I asked, but he only shrugged.
"I don't know. How does it make you feel? How did Carl react after his spat with Lori?" He asked, making me sigh.
"I'm not sure how to feel about it, not yet. When Carl yelled at Lori, he came up here to his and Harry's cell. I was just getting Harry to sleep when he came in. He practically threw himself into the bed with us, holding on to me as if I was going to disappear and asked if I was disappointed in him for yelling at Lori and leaving without anyone for backup." I replied, causing Rick to nod.
"What'd you say?" He asked quietly, as if I was going to be mad at him.
"I told him I could never be disappointed in him. I told him that he should've brought someone, especially since things can happen that nobody's ready for, but I know he's a strong boy and that he'll be able to take care of himself. I told him I was proud of him for helping, especially since you and the others were really busy." I answered, making him sigh, and a slight smile brush over his face.
"Ya know, you really are a good mom, Rachel. Carl and Harry are lucky to have you." Rick stated, sitting up from the bed.
I went to follow, but he simply turned towards me, placed a kiss on my lips and then left. I sat on the bed feeling surprised, since I didn't expect the talk to go so well between Rick and I. I really didn't expect him to accept that Carl now called his birth mother by her name. Maybe they really were done with each other...
