A couple of days later, things changed again. Everyone was ready for the ambush of the Govenor. Rick and I had decided to send Judith, Harry, and Carl with Beth and Hershel into the woods. We knew they would be safe there, and if a straggler or two ran through, they'd be able to take them out or get away if they needed to. Out of everything, we knew we had to keep the kids safe over everyone, and we had to protect our home.
So, when the Govenor and his people rolled up, we were ready for them. We had plenty of guns and ammo to protect ourselves, especially from the small army that the Govenor had brought with him. It seemed like they didn't know much about guns though, since we were easily taking them all down with a quickness. As we were shooting them, I felt a bullet graze my arm. I hissed in pain, but I continued to take out the enemies, knowing if I walked away from the slight injury, I would be turning my back on my group when they needed me.
After some time, most of the Govenor's army was dead. I watched as the Govenor and a few of the stragglers ran from the fight. They had left their dead and injured behind, and I knew they weren't planning on coming back for them. We weren't helping them either, since I knew they were enemies and we couldn't chance them trying to pull a Randall.
"We should follow them and take the rest of them out." Glenn said, and for the first time in a while, I agreed with him.
"I will stay here with the kids and make sure they're safe. You guys be careful." I commented, and everyone nodded.
I lead Hershel, Beth, Harry, Judith, and Carl back into the cell block. Harry and Judith had to take a nap, since the two had quite an eventful day. Beth, Carl, Hershel and I sat at the table while we waited for the others.
"When the others get back, I have something tell you about Carl. You and his father need to know what happened out there." Hershel said, and I nodded.
I was surprised to see an entire bus pull up at the prison, but when it started to unload with women, children, and elderly, I could tell that these were people from Woodbury. Only a few people on the bus were males over sixteen, but I supposed the Governor used every able body to fight.
"The Govenor took out the rest of his people. We found them in the middle of the road. Karen was the one who told us what happened." Maggie said, after she came over to stand next to me.
"So Rick decided to take in all of the people of Woodbury?" I asked, and Maggie nodded.
"It's safer for them here. The Govenor was just going to leave them for dead." She answered, causing me to frown.
All these families had put their faith into the Govenor, and he let them down without a fraction of guilt. I hated the Govenor more and more as he messed up throughout his life. I wondered if he was this horrible when the world was still going in a semi-good direction.
"Daryl and Carol will lead them to their cell block." Glenn said, as he walked past Maggie and I.
Once the new people from Woodbury was brought to their cell block, our group went back to our own cell block.
"Rick, I need to speak with you and Rachel." Hershel commented, so Rick and I walked off with him to speak in private.
He told us that Carl had shot down a kid who was a part of Woodbury. Apparently the kid was handing over his weapon, but Carl still shot him. Rick swore Carl was just trying to protect everyone, but I didn't know what to think. I wondered if I should really believe that he was just doing it to protect everyone, or if he was doing it because he seen us shooting down so many people.
"How are we going to handle all these new people?" I asked, as our group sat around the table.
"We will have to do more frequent runs, but the Woodbury people know that they have to pull their own weight around here. We will have to figure out what we're going to do for food, but we couldn't leave them behind." Rick said, and I nodded.
"There will most likely be at least one other hunter in the Woodbury group, so I will have another body helping me catch food for all the new people here." Daryl commented, shrugging slightly.
"Do you think the others might know some ways to help out and make things more efficient?" Carol asked, and Rick nodded.
"They should. With their help, we might have an easier time getting by with more people." He replied, as I simply nodded in agreement.
After the group meeting, I decided to go back to my cell. Bringing new people in was definitely going to be hard to deal with. I was use to who we had, so having more people was different. More people meant more food consumed, more water consumed, and more chances of being attacked at night. I just hoped all of the new people didn't cause us any problems.
If we were lucky, everything would work out for the better. I wanted everything to run smoothly. Maybe we could have a makeshift school to teach all of the children. Maybe we could have an entire cafeteria for feeding everyone in the prison. Maybe we could have many new things, but I wasn't sure if the future was going to look up for us or not. So many bad things had happened, and we were stuck in the middle. As long as things worked out for a little while, we'd be able to handle life a little longer...
