Song of the Chapter: Head Above Water by Avril Lavigne
As the months went on, the days seemed to be longer. Carl seemed to grow colder towards the world. Harry didn't seem as scared anymore either. It was as if the boys were completely changing while we traveled and tried to find a permanent shelter. Lori grew more and more irritable towards everyone, as he belly grew larger.
Today we had found a house to scavenge and sit and eat. Rick had brought Carl inside with him, deciding he was more than old enough to ransack houses often, instead of only sometimes. I didn't argue, since Carl wasn't my son and I really didn't have a say in what Rick made him do. Well, Rick asks my opinions on stuff but I still don't really have a say in much of anything.
Anyhow, soon enough we got the signal to come inside, before we were all huddled in the living room. Carl sat beside me, making me want to cry when he was opening a can of dog food. Rick walked over and grabbed the can, before chunking it across the room. Carl moved closer to me, as if getting a sense of comfort and protection from what had just happened.
Sadly, soon, T-Dog whistled and let us know there was walkers headed towards the house, before everyone got up and headed back to their vehicles. Rick drove, as I sat passenger and Carl and Harry slept in the back seat. They were exhausted and malnourished but I tried my hardest to get them better. I still went days without eating, making sure they had food instead. Rick had pointed out that I seemed to look a bit sickly now but I still didn't change the way I was going.
After about two hours, the vehicles stopped and everyone began to stretch their legs. My back was stiff from the lack of sleep and the lack of real movement. I couldn't wait for us to finally have a place to call our own. I watched Carl and Harry sleep, as the rest of the group conversed and Daryl and Rick went off into the woods. I knew Daryl was trying to teach Rick a bit about hunting, though he couldn't be taught much at a time, seeing the situation we had been in since the farm. He hadn't really been teaching him long either.
"Hey, how are you feeling?" Maggie asked, as she walked over towards me.
"I'm a bit stiff, other than that, I'm fine." I answered, as she nodded.
"You look pale." She commented, making me shrug.
"I'm fine. Rick's been saying I look sickly now, but I'm okay. I just- I've skipped a few meals since we've been on the road. It's only to feed the boys though. They need the food more than I do." I said, causing her to purse her lips.
"They may need food but not every time we get it. What the boys need is their mother and they won't have that if you don't start eating." Maggie stated, as I looked at her shocked.
"Carl's not even-" I began, before she cut me off.
"Carl may not be yours by blood but with you and Rick being like you are, and the way you're taking care of him, you might as well be his mother. Everyone sees it, especially in the way both of them look at you, Rachel. Please eat something." She said, as she handed me a granola bar.
"Maggie-" I began, before she cut me off again.
"Eat it. All of it." She stated, as she stood there and watched me eat every bit of it.
After I ate it, she smiled and then wandered off towards Glenn. I started feeling a bit better after eating the granola bar, so I figured that maybe Maggie was right. As the boys were waking up, I seen Daryl and Rick coming back out of the woods. Rick came over to the car with a somewhat smile on his face.
"I think Daryl and I found us a shelter." Rick stated, making me grin.
"That's awesome. Where is it? What is it?" I beamed, as Rick looked away for a moment.
"It's back in the woods, but we'll take our cars there tomorrow. You might not be too keen on the idea, but the shelter is an abandoned prison." Rick answered, causing me to bite my lip, before I shook my head and then smiled.
"Ya know what, nothing's going to turn this into bad news. So what, we'll be living in a prison? It's got walls and safety. Maybe our luck's beginning to turn. I don't believe in God but if he was real I think he'd be just trying to help us right now." I commented, making Rick smile and nod.
"Well, c'mon Rachel, boys, let's get a move on. We've got to clear the field before nighttime. That way we can clear the building in the morning." Rick said, as the boys hurried up and got out of the truck.
We followed behind Daryl and Rick, paying attention to our surroundings, making sure nobody was about to be attacked. I carried Harry on my back, to ensure he wouldn't get himself hurt either. I didn't want to risk one of the boys getting hurt right before we arrived at our new shelter.
When we finally arrived at the prison, I was a bit amazed. The prison seemed to be quite the structure for shelter. The field was full of walkers but at one time, the prison had been full of inmates. We all ran across the field, before they opened the hole in the gate. We all shoved our bodies through the whole in the gate, before they closed it back up.
"Now all we have to do is clear the yard." Rick said, as we looked out over the walker filled yard.
Sounds more simple than it looks...
