Song of the Chapter: All Around Me by FlyLeaf
Later in the day, Harry had woken up and didn't seem as cranky. He was still rather clingy, so after getting dressed, I brought him outside and held him in my lap as I rocked him on the rocking chair. He kept himself sprawled against my chest, as his legs were wrapped lightly around my waist. I had my arms wrapped around him, running my fingers through his hair and kissing his head every-so-often.
I watched Rick's group do their daily routines, though I didn't see Rick. Speaking of not seeing Rick, I hadn't seen Herschel or Jimmy for the last hour either. I knew two out of the three men wouldn't go for a run, so I wasn't sure where they could've gone off to. As I held Harry, soothing him from all his nightmares the night before, I heard the group starting to get antsy. Before I knew it, many of them were gathered around the front of the house.
"Where's Rick?" Shane asked, causing me to scowl at him.
"How would I know? I've been taking care of my son all day." I retorted, causing him to glare at me.
Before I could do anything about the tension between Shane and I, Shane began to to have his little fit and started handing out guns to everyone. As he was trying to hand a gun to Carl, he refused. I stood up and walked towards them, before Lori came out and pushed her son away from Shane. I pulled Carl towards me, as Lori argued with Shane. I could tell by the way she yelled at him, there was deeper issues than this gun thing but I decided to keep my two cents out of their business. Though I could easily figure it out with the way they acted when they thought people weren't around. Besides that, Carl had told me he thought something happened between Lori and Shane whilst they had been under the assumption that Rick was dead.
As they argued, I watched Rick, Herschel and Jimmy come out of the woods with walkers being led on snare poles. Everyone ran towards them, Carl pulling me with them. Harry held on to me tightly, as Carl held on to my arm. Shane shouted and shot at the walker on Herschel's snare pole. Rick scolded Shane before it all went to hell.
"Enough for living our lives in fear! Enough of searching for a little girl who's gone! You're right man, that is enough." Shane shouted, before he pried the doors open for the barn.
Slowly all of the walkers in the barn began to come out and everyone began to shoot at them. Harry held tightly to me and cried because he was scared of everything going on around him. Carl held on to his mother, as he cried as well from the terror going on around them. Soon everyone believed all the walkers were gone, before a small child came out of the barn. I watched as Carol cried for her, knowing now that the small child was Sophia, the girl we had been looking for all this time. Shane had no remorse or shame on his face, he was still too weak to shoot Sophia though. He watched as Rick shot Sophia, and Daryl held Carol as she cried for her fallen child. Carol ran from the group, as both children cried at the carnage they seen around them.
I stood to my feet, heading back to the porch, sitting back down on the rocking chair, trying to console Harry. He cried deeply into my chest, as I ran my fingers through his hair. I seen the group headed right back up to the house, Shane yelling at Herschel, accusing him of knowing Sophia was in the barn. As Shane went to grab Herschel, Maggie whiped around and smacked Shane in the face, yelling at him.
"I wanted you people off my farm once your boy got better, but Rick talked me out of it. This time I mean it. Off this farm." Herschel demanded, causing my blood to run cold.
I wasn't part of Rick's group, which made me wonder if Herschel meant I had to be gone as well. I know I had said I'd leave in the middle of the night before but with the way Harry is right now there's no way I can just pack up and leave. Harry needs some type of stability, so does Carl. Poor Carl would be kicked out into that horrid world again as well. I felt so bad for the children, knowing things were going to get worse before they got better. As I sat, holding Harry who was now sleeping, I heard someone approaching us. I looked up and seen Rick was headed over to us. He leant against the banister in front of us, seeing Harry finally asleep after what had happened earlier.
"I'm talking to Herschel, keeping us here. He'll agree, as long as Shane stays inline. If he doesn't though, I want you to know that you and your son are more than welcome to become part of our group. After everything we've been through, we've put you both through, you both are already considered part of our group. You don't have to leave with us, just consider it. You're safer in numbers." Rick stated, before looking down and walking away from us.
I wasn't sure what to do. I didn't want to leave but I knew sooner or later it was going to be inevitable. I knew it'd be saferbfoe for Harry if I left with them, but I didn't want them to feel like I was another person they had to protect. I could protect myself and Harry alone, though I knew Harry needed the interaction. Maybe it wouldn't be too bad but there wasn't any way of telling what could go wrong and what could go right. In this life, each minute is lived as your last...
