Song of the Chapter: Panic Room by Aura

I walked for miles, not sure where exactly I was going. I was never good with directions, I was always too absent-minded. All I was worried about right now was shelter, the heat was terrible. I couldn't deal with the heat much longer, I'd end up having a heat stroke. I'm not old, but heat stroke was possible with my dehydration level running higher by the hour. Sooner or later, I was going to end up with a killer headache, possibly a migraine. Honestly, I was glad I always carried meds with me for when I needed them. I also always had first aid things, as well as extra food and water, just in case I was in a situation where I couldn't get away. I know what you're thinking, but I haven't really taken a break to drink, that's why I'm dehydrated. I'd rather have a shelter, before I decided to chill out and drink something, maybe even eat a little food.

I kept walking for about an hour, before I heard a noise. The noise sounded like crying. I wasn't sure where it was coming from, nor who it was coming from. I decided to slowly follow the noise, unsure if it were a trap or not. Once I was close, I happened to be behind a small shed. I looked around the side, and seen a lady crying as she sat with a young child. The child looked scared, but was not crying like the woman. I sighed nervously, before I  quietly made my way over, trying not to startle the woman or child.

"Excuse me? Ma'am, are you okay?" I asked, before the lady quickly looked up at me.

"Oh, thank God! Please! Please help me miss!" The lady cried, and I nodded warily.

"What happened? What do you need?" I asked, and she slowly looked down, and I followed her gaze to see a bad bite on her leg.

"I was bit, about an hour ago. I'm going to turn, but I need you to keep me from turning." She said, and I bit my lip.

"What about your boy?" I asked, as I watched more tears stream down her face.

I crouched down to her, before she grabbed my hand and looked into my eyes with tears running down her face. I could tell clearly that she was starting to die, and it hurt to see her in such a condition with the little boy with her.

"This is my son. His name is Harry and he's four years old. Please, take him with you. Treat him like he's your own son. I guess he is now, since I'm dying. Just, please- promise me you'll take Harry and love him." The lady cried, as my eyes widened.

"I-I will take him, and I'll care for him." I stuttered, and she smiled sadly.

"Thank you...uh?" She trailed off, and I smiled slightly.

"Rachel, and you are?" I asked, and she nodded slightly.

"My name is Meghan. Thank you, Rachel." She said, and I nodded.

"You're welcome, Meghan." I replied, as she slowly tried to stand to her feet.

"Harry, baby, you know Mommy's sick, right?" Meghan asked Harry, and he nodded.

"Yes Mommy." He replied, and I frowned.

"Well, this lady, her name is Rachel, she's going to take care of you now. She'll be like  your new Mommy, and she's going to love you just as much as me." Meghan said, and Harry shook his head.

"But I want you, Mommy." He retorted, and she began to cry again.

"I'm so sorry, baby. I'm sick, and I can't take care of you anymore. Just know, I love you so much Harry." Meghan cried, and Harry nodded sadly.

"I love you too, Mommy." He replied, as she wrapped her arms around him and kissed the top of his head.

"Bye baby." She whispered, as she began to lose her balance.

"Bye Mommy." He murmured, as he began to cry.

"Harry, sweetie. Are you hungry?" I asked, and he nodded.

"Yeah." He answered, and I smiled.

"Okay, well, I'm going to give you some food and water, but I want you to sit inside of this shed while you eat, okay? I'll be in there in a minute." I stated, and he nodded.

"Okay." He replied, and I smiled again.

I walked over to the shed and let him get inside, before handing him a bag of gold fish crackers and a pack of cookies as well as a bottle of water, before I closed the door. I then walked back over to Meghan, as she tried to stay awake.

"Thank you, Rachel." She said, and I nodded.

"You're welcome, Meghan." I replied, and she sighed shakily.

"Can you-can you do it now? That way I don't suffer anymore?" She asked quietly, and I nodded slowly.

I pulled her close to my body, and let her hug me. As she hugged me, I told her to close her eyes and think of happy thoughts. Once her eyes were closed and she seemed calm and happy, I stabbed her in the head. I then dragged her body to the woods, keeping it out of the line of sight of the shed. I quickly ran back over to the shed and opened the door. Harry smiled up at me, as he ate his cookies. I smiled at him as well, before sitting down with him. I pulled out a granola bar and a bottled water, before starting to eat with him.  I was just glad he was smiling at me. I was scared he'd run from me the first chance he got. Honestly, I don't know what I'm going to do now. I've never cared for a child before, especially not in this world. I just hope it doesn't become too hard, I don't know how I'd cope. Hopefully it won't be too hard, guess I'll just have to wait and see...

A/N: I hope you guys liked this chapter. I bet you guys have all read books like this, where the girl finds a kid and takes them in as there own, well, that's how an apocalypse would work. Also, the songs at the beginning of the chapters will just be songs I had listened to when I got the idea for the chapter. Just letting you know, each chapter will have a different song, because I have over 700 songs on my phone.

Love you guys!
