Song of the Chapter: Animals by Maroon 5
We had searched for the little girl, Sophia, for a few days now. Daryl had been hurt two days ago, after finding her doll. He had fallen down a riveen, had one of his arrows go through his side, and then was grazed with a bullet on the side of his head by Andrea. She had shot at him thinking he was a walker, but luckily had missed him, or he would've been dead right now. It was early morning, around eight o'clock, when I had decided to get up. Harry was still asleep in the bed, probably going to be asleep for another hour or two. He had been having nightmares about walkers for the last two nights, so he hasn't slept very well. Anyhow, as he slept, I decided to go and get some fresh air. Since he hasn't been sleeping well, he's been clingy and I haven't really been able to do much without him. I've been sitting on the porch, rocking him in the rocking chair for most of the day both days.
Anyhow, after getting dressed and throwing my shoes on, I made my way downstairs. Maggie looked at me, not showing a bright smile like usual. I went to ask her what was wrong, but she just looked down, not making eye contact with me again. I almost wondered if it was something about me, but I decided not to be bothered by it. So, I walked outside and sat down on the steps of the porch. I seen Rick's group eating breakfast, causing me to sigh. I wasn't use to eating breakfast, so I normally only ate lunch and dinner. Glenn waved me over, causing me to begrudgingly stand up and walk over towards the group.
"So, the barn's full of walkers." He blurted out, causing my heart to skip a beat.
The group made their way towards the barn, as I stayed behind, trying to figure out what I was going to do. Harry loved it here. Harry loved the people, especially Carl, and I hated the idea of taking it all away from him. I needed him safe though, no matter what the circumstances were. So, I made my way inside, walking back up to my room. I seen Harry was still asleep, though he looked a bit upset. I kissed his head, running my fingers through his hair, seeing him become calm again. I could hear Rick's group yelling outside, as I prayed they wouldn't wake up Harry. I needed him to be well rested, especially if I were to decide to pack up and leave with him tonight. I knew it probably wasn't the best idea, but I didn't need those walkers causing us a problem. I had to protect Harry, and nothing was going to stop me from doing that.
As I sat in the room, watching Harry sleep, I heard a light tapping on the door. I slowly made my way over, before opening the door and seeing Rick standing outside of it. I sighed silently, opening the door to allow him inside. I closed it behind him, to keep the sounds from downstairs out. He sat down in a seat across from me, as I sat criss-cross on the foot of the bed.
"Did you know about the walkers in the barn?" Rick asked, causing me to look at him shocked.
"No, I would've fled if I did. I-I plan on leaving tonight. I can't chance something happening." I replied, causing Rick to shake his head.
"No need to leave. I'm going to talk to Herschel, see if I can reason with him. He sees them as family and friends, as sick people. I'm going to at least try and see if he'll let us secure the doors better." Rick stated, causing me to sigh.
"What if you can't get him to reason with you? Than what?" I asked, causing Rick to look away.
"That's not going to happen. I'll take care of it." He replied, before standing up.
"I believe you." I mumbled, causing Rick to look my way and nod in appreciation.
Rick went to leave the room, before he stopped at looked back at me once more.
"I meant to ask, since Carl asked me. What's wrong with Harry? He hasn't been himself." Rick asked, causing me to frown as I looked down at the little boy.
"He's been having nightmares about walkers for the last two nights. He hasn't been getting much sleep, so he's tired and clingy." I replied, causing Rick to frown as well.
"I'll fix the barn, maybe give him peace of mind." He said, before walking out of the room and shutting the door behind him.
I believed Rick, I really did. Well, I believed in him. I wasn't sure if Herschel would ever agree to doing anything with that barn, especially if he seen those walkers as his family and friends. I knew it was hard to lose people to the epidemic but the world couldn't just stop because you lost someone. The world was turning more and more shitty each day but you just had to keep rolling on. You couldn't let the world knock you down, especially when you had someone to fight for, like I had Harry.
I knew Herschel had his daughters to fight for but when it came to losing other family, such as a wife and son, I knew it would be harder to accept. Maggie had told me about the loss of her step mother and her step brother Shawn. I felt bad for her, Beth and Herschel but the world had to continue even without those people. I just wish they understood that, that way we wouldn't be in this situation. I wouldn't be in the situation between living in constant fear or leaving behind the shelter of this farm and returning to sleeping with one eye open. I just didn't know what to do...
