Chapter Thirty Two

"Look what we have here." I heard, causing me to jump slightly.

I clutched Harry to me, as a group of men circled us. They pointed their weapons at us, as they spoke to each other. A couple of the men had "claimed" different items of ours, and one had creepily tried to claim me, but the leader of the group watched as Daryl grabbed me, and the leader said that Daryl had already laid claim.

Luckily, the group didn't kill us, but we were practically forced to go with them. Daryl stuck by mine and Harry's side, not letting us leave his sight. He refused for us to disappear, and I completely understood why. I was scared of the men, but I wasn't going to show it. Hell, I barely let Harry let go of my hand, and when he was sleeping, I had him laying in my lap the entire time.

The group had brought us to a warehouse, and Daryl had claimed us a spot to sleep. I knew I wouldn't sleep, but I did allow Harry to sleep. Of course, while Harry slept, one of the men tried to start an argument. The man had claimed that Daryl had stolen his part of a rabbit they had hunted, so an argument ensued. Daryl and the man were in each other's faces, but the leader--whom I learned was named Joe--broke up the two. He listened to both sides, before he had the other man carted off.

Apparently the man was going to be taught a lesson for lying, but Daryl was mad that Joe had allowed the man to even accuse Daryl of such a crime. Daryl was extra pissed though, since the man had woken Harry, and yelled about Daryl being a thief in front of Harry and I. He didn't like that someone would say such things in front of people that Daryl claimed were his family. To these men, I was his sister, and Harry was his nephew, so he wasn't going to allow someone to say such terrible things about him in front of his family.

"It's time we head out." Joe announced later, and we had to leave the warehouse.

As we walked out and followed the group down the road, I felt my stomach churn when I seen the man's lifeless body on the ground. Joe claimed it was their way of dealing with problems, since they didn't allow anyone in their group to be any sort of criminal. I just believed they didn't allow their people to get caught doing a crime, and when they got caught, they were handled differently.

"We have to leave this place. I don't like these people." I murmured, walking close to Daryl.

"I'll get us out." He answered, and I simply nodded in reply.

Later, we learned that Joe and the group were after another group that they claimed were killers. Apparently the group had killed one of their people, but I couldn't help but wonder what the man had done to be killed. I didn't fully want to believe that the man deserved to die, but I also didn't want to fully believe that the other group were bad guys either. This group was sure teaching me that a lot of humans had turned evil after the world fell, but there wasn't anything that I could do about it.

The walking was continuous, and I wondered how they knew exactly where the group was staying. I didn't question how they tracked them so well though, since I knew questioning them meant problems that I wasn't willing to have. My legs were tired, and I knew Harry and Daryl's were too, but we had to follow the men for now.

I was glad the air kept us cool, otherwise I would've been even more miserable, and so would the other two. We were wearing light jackets to keep away the nip in the air, but I liked the weather quite a bit. As I walked with Harry in between Daryl and I, I could feel Harry's legs growing wobbly from the hold of his hand in mine.

"Mommy, I'm tired." Harry grumbled, but he kept his voice low, so the men wouldn't hear him.

"I know, baby." I replied, but there wasn't much I could do.

All I could do was pick Harry up and carry him while we walked. If I had known we'd be walking so long, I would've found some kind of trolley or something to push Harry in. With that, I wouldn't have to carry him, and he wouldn't have to feel tired from all the walking. I didn't think of finding one though, so I had to carry him when he was tired. I was his mother though, and I was going to sacrifice anything I had to sacrifice to make Harry at least a little happy.

"I can carry him for a while. You look ready to drop." Daryl commented, causing me to look over at him.

"You're just as tired as I." I replied, making him sigh.

"I know, but I also know you need less weight, otherwise you might fall out. Just pass him over, I'll hand him back if I get tired." He said, and I reluctantly agreed.

I handed Harry over to Daryl, and I sighed in relief. My back was getting tired, and my legs had almost felt like jelly, but handing Harry over to Daryl took a little of that pressure away. I knew I'd have Harry back in my arms soon, and Daryl and I would probably take turns holding him for a while, but that's what we had to do. We would take turns, and I'd never trust one of the men in the group to hold Harry. Daryl was the only one I could trust, and there wasn't anything we could do about it, not yet. One day though, we would be leaving this group far, far behind us...
